First Look: The Book Club East London – A really good night out

Date:

Whilst the name mightn’t sound overly vivacious, the Book Club is anything but dull…

When it comes to a night out there are a few things that are dominant on the check list. Good food, good drink, good location and good venue. And here we have a place that hits the nail on the head for all four- The Book Club. The Book Club London

Ignore any preconceptions and get ready to wipe the scents of musty paperbacks off your nostrils, for The Book Club id a venue sure to hand you more than a few memories for you to look back on, and an amazing cocktail to go with it.

For this sedate name hides one of the quirkiest and most creative bars in London, fusing lively events and late night drinking every night of the week. Infact, The book club turns conventional arts institution on its head, mixing boozing with brain power, offering plenty of events such as informative talks and life drawings, to  classic video game night, bands, DJs and even a ping pong tournament.

You can visit for food all day with breakfast starting at 8am, leading to lunch, or dinner but you can also visit for the cocktails alone of which an electic mix is offered. They are served in glasses or pitchers to share and the emphasis is placed on fun and easy drinkability rather than some serious mixology. The ‘Lorraine Kelly’ and ‘Don’t go to Dalston’ are some personal favourites. Food is simple, with offerings like nachos and sharing platters, but it is homely, tasty and filling, just perfect for a lunch meeting or an after work casual dinner with friends.

The building itself is beautiful and you can feel the atmosphere pumping before you even step through the doors. A former Victorian warerhouse on Leonard Street sees two of its floors having been DIY SOS’d and kitted out for eating, drinking, thinking, meeting and dancing- what more could you need? The clientele are cool and quirky and match the décor- mix and match vintage soft furnishings, mosaics and graphic lighting features which par well with the raw-pared down character of the building.

So, whether looking for somewhere to hole up with your laptop and a mocktail for a bit of creative thinking, or for somewhere a little more wild in the evening, head down to The Book Club and get ready to create a whole host of stories…
