Laura Siljander – New Talent

Date:

We interview one to watch Laura Siljander…

Laura has recently completed a degree in Fashion Design and Marketing. She is originally from Finland and heritage is a big part of her as a designer. She describes how the absence of a significant lingerie market in Finland has created an interest and intrigue that has made her want to explore all the aspects of lingerie and the possibility to use lingerie in designs in a unconventional way..

Tell us a bit about your final collection:

Caged Beauty, this collection is my exploration of different aspects of femininity and how the female body is portrayed in culture. Femininity and beauty are often portrayed in a certain limited way. this collection represents the restriction and the objectification of the female body.

How would you describe your style?

My aesthetic as a designer is classic and feminine, while still being contemporary and forward thinking. I am particularly inspired by the 1930’s to the late 1950’s, the whole mood and aesthetic of glamour and femininity is something I enjoy very much. I find my Scandinavian heritage and its mythology influential in my designs.

Who’s your fashion icon and why?

I don’t have a one fashion icon in particular, I find the 1930’s aesthetic the most inspirational and exciting. The style of dress in that time was based around female body and a silhouette of a woman being created with the use of structured undergarments.

Where would you like to be in five years?

I would love the opportunity to be a assistant designer at a luxury lingerie design house.

Where is your favourite place to go in London and why?

Columbia Road Flower Market is one of the most inspirational places that i like to visit, the colours and the smells ignite my senses and excite me as a designer.
