The Influence of Celebrities on Our Appearance and Fashion Choices

Celebrities influence the way many of us style ourselves and they can also play a major role in our fashion choices, dictating what’s hot and what’s not in the world of fashion. Here are just some of the ways that celebrities affect what we wear and how we look.

Influence of Celebrities

Accessories

From watches to micro handbags, if we see our favourite celeb rocking a bold accessory, it’s a guarantee we’ll be ordering something to nail the trend ourselves. The recent trend for teeny-tiny handbags, as flaunted by Rihanna, Beyoncé and Lizzo has seen many of us swapping our more practical-sized bags for miniature versions instead.

When it comes to celebrity-inspired accessories, elegant watches have long been a go-to for both men and women looking to elevate their look. Luxury brands such as Omega, first made famous by JFK in the 1960s, and other big names in watch-making, such as Cartier, Tag Heuer and Rolex, never go out of style. Investing in a classy timepiece is a surefire way to emulate your favourite celebrity.

Clothing

Arguably, some of the biggest high street trends have filtered down from big-name celebrities and their fashion choices. For example, some of the 90s and 00s fashion trends that have seen a resurgence of late, such as low-rise denim jeans were first seen on the likes of Keira Knightley and Christina Aguilera and their renewed popularity has been led by model sisters, Gigi and Bella Hadid.

Similarly, the matching, two-piece velour tracksuits first made trendy by Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez in the late 90s and early 00s went out of style for a while but they are now being worn by the likes of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, bringing them back in fashion and onto the high street once again.

Makeup

It isn’t just what we wear that’s influenced by celebs, either. Many of the trendiest makeup looks are inspired by celebrities too and they seem to have an ever-changing array of looks for us to copy.

Glossy lips look to be making a comeback led by Zendaya and J-Lo, after years of Kylie-inspired matte lips. Blush strobing – applying a bright blush beneath your foundation for a rosy, dewy look –  is also inspiring Autumn-Winter makeup looks, thanks to models Candice Swanepoel and Ashley Graham leading the pack with this look.

Blue eyeshadow is also making yet another comeback. First made popular in the 60s by supermodel Twiggy, blue eyeshadow was trendy again in the 80s and frosted blue came back into vogue during the early 00s when it was sported by the likes of Cameron Diaz and Paris Hilton. More recently, blue eyeshadow was the talk of New York Fashion Week earlier this year and was worn by Reese Witherspoon on the Emmys red carpet.
