The Reveal The Real You initiative saw up and coming photographers from around the UK challenged to document and celebrate communities and causes they feel passionately about through a series of ten unique, striking images. From capturing the underground breakdancing scene in Birmingham to showcasing South London’s young and innovative jazz musicians and celebrating the careful motion and order that lies at the heart of dance, the three prize winners being showcased in the pop-up gallery were chosen by a panel of expert independent judges and highlight how different communities come together through technology, art, culture, music and dance.

The three winners, chosen from a shortlist of 20 final submissions, were each awarded a £10,000 bursary to donate to a community cause or initiative of their choice – Break Mission, Shoreditch Youth Dance and The Camberwell After School Project.

To celebrate the culmination of the initiative, the free pop-up gallery will be an opportunity for locals to explore the winning shots and learn more about the inspirational stories of people who are empowered by Huawei technology.

The gallery will also be running a portrait photography studio from 12pm – 5pm on Saturday 10th March in collaboration with The Photocopy Club. Taking inspiration from the Reveal the Real You campaign and the powerful photography produced by the three winners, the pop-up portrait studio will combine technology and creativity to create a piece of art in real time.

Visitors to the gallery will be invited to have their portrait taken on a Huawei P10 in the studio, which will then be printed out and added to a wall in the gallery as part of a growing art exhibition. Each participant will get their own black & white Xerox portrait to take away with them, and at the end of the day all the portraits will be made in to a zine.

The Reveal the Real You Winners are Anthony Shintai Amao, Sahvannah Amaka and Kat Collings.

Andrew Garrihy, CMO for Huawei Europe commented: “Technology empowers people to achieve and do more. To demonstrate this, we partnered with Dazed, challenging some of today’s most up-and-coming photographers to celebrate the communities and causes they care most about, using the Huawei P10; a dual lens camera phone built on the century-long legacy of Leica, the original street photography pioneers.

“Our finalists have shown just how powerful a tool the smartphone is in capturing the world around us and we’re thrilled Huawei technology has given people a platform to tell their stories, shining a light on many of the important issues impacting young people today.”
