Find an agency

The most important thing you can do is to find an agency. There are some that work with older models so it pays to take some extra time to hunt them down. You’ll need to have some headshots done professionally and lots of them. Expect to have to talk to many different agencies and leave your portfolio at each of them. If you have any relevant experience with modelling or have some connections to the world of fashion or photography then make sure to highlight that. Make sure to read the submission requirements when applying to an agency. Some require all submissions to be done online.

Hone your skills

There are actually modelling schools out there that can help you learn how to be a professional model. They teach you how to walk, how to pose and even how to look for work. They don’t come cheap but it may be worth spending the money to have an edge over others that have no experience or education. You’ll also have an inside track on the modelling world so when casting calls are announced, you’ll be among the first to know.

Keep your looks on point

You obviously need to be good looking and in good shape for your age. Make sure you are hitting the gym and using all the right skincare products. Read up on all the latest fashion trends so you can dress for success. And learn from other models themselves. Hone up on some interviews with models so you can get an insight into what you should be doing to land the gig.

Hit the big cities

There are two major places in the US where you absolutely need to have a presence if you want to land a modelling job. New York and LA. That is where the agencies are and where there is an actual industry in fashion and advertising. It is the hub so you’ll need to be able to get to those places frequently if you want a chance. Other areas where you may find success in the US is Miami and Chicago if you don’t want to deal with so much cut-throat competition.

Outside the US you should be looking at London, Paris and Milan for obvious places. Though even Berlin and Lisbon are looking like cities where there is some noise being made in advertising which may help you if you locate there.
