Trends come and go: the top 5 timeless fashion pieces that are here to stay
Seasons change and trends vary. Some only get five minutes in the spotlight, others are here for the long run. No matter when you buy some pieces, you can have confidence in knowing they will always have a place in your wardrobe and will endure the fashion trend cycle much longer than most pieces available. Here are five timeless fashion pieces that are here to stay…
The Oxford shirt
First on our list of timeless fashion pieces is the classic white shirt. A white shirt to a man is what a little black dress is to a woman. If you’re unsure of a dress code, the minimal effort shirt can look both smart and casual. The Oxford shirt is versatile and can be worn with a blazer and trousers for a formal look or can be undone with a t-shirt underneath and paired with jeans. It can even be worn with shorts in the summer.
The classic watch
While smartwatches have boomed in recent years, the traditional luxury watch is still shining. Smartwatches – while being able to track vital health statistics and having a plethora of apps and abilities – will, after two to five years, become practically obsolete. A traditional luxury watch, however, is proving to be quite the investment. Being one of the most recognisable watch brands in the world, Rolex is one watch manufacturer to invest in, holding its value and in some cases, increasing over time.
The trench coach
Who would have thought a war would unintentionally launch one of the most iconic and timeless fashion pieces, still an essential after 100 years since it was first seen? Unlike most trends, it wasn’t on a catwalk where the trench coat entered the light, but rather the trenches where military personnel were stationed in the First World War – a testament to its longevity. While other trench coats have hit stores, it was the original Burberry trench coat, designed in 1912 by Thomas Burberry, which protected officers against the harsh weather – today, the Burberry trench is still considered the most iconic.
Chelsea boots
Whether it is jeans or trousers, Chelsea boots work with pretty much any outfit. It’s one of the most adaptable pieces of footwear a man can have in his shoe collection. Similar to the trench coat, the Chelsea boot has a strong history dating back to the Victorian age, having been attributed to J. Sparkes-Hall, the bootmaker to Queen Victoria.
Denim
A pair of jeans can probably be found in most wardrobes around the world and with most clothing brands selling a pair of jeans, they have well and truly found their home in the fashion world. In 1873, the blue jean was born when Levi Strauss & Co. and Jacob Davis received a U.S. patent for an Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings. Although denim trousers had been around for many years, it was by adding the metal rivets which created what we now know today as jeans. From workwear to a classic essential, jeans can be worn for almost any function.
