There are more pressures in society than ever to stay looking youthful and botox is on the up. But while we’ve all heard the word, we don’t always know exactly what it is. Here, we explain…
Growing old is inevitable, yet it is the aesthetic detriments which come with it that many oppose. Wrinkles are a part of life, just as much so as the hiccups or sneezing, we just can’t help it. This is why many are turning to botox, but although the word is thrown around a lot, plenty of us don’t actually know what it is.
Botox is the name of the brand and what is injected in a natural protein extracted from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. While it used to only be used by the elite and famous, dermatologists and cosmetologists have stated that they have around eight to nine clients visit the clinic per week to undergo the treatment because of its renowned results.
Anyone above 18 is allowed to undergo botox, but it’s important to remember if you are pregnant or have certain health conditions or are under medications that affect your nerves and muscles it isn’t for you.
Botox can be administered in a matter of minutes in tiny doses and works by being injected to the muscles which cause wrinkles or fine lines in your face. This toxin paralyses the muscles from sending signals to the nerve and its contraction is prevented. This then lets the muscle relax for a specific duration. Usually, the effects of botox last for around four to six months and it’s advisable to consult with your dermatologist or cosmetologist before starting treatment. The most common places to be treated are your forehead and the areas between and around your eyes, eyebrows and lips. It isn’t usually painful and feels like small pricks to the face. If you find it is painful, dermatologists can use anaesthesia or cold packs to minimize this pain for you.
