There’s nothing like a good cocktail, but why wait to be out to enjoy the tastes of a cosmopolitan or martini? Here’s how to recreate your favourite cocktails from home…

A good cocktail out on the town is one of life’s greatest pleasures. And for those who are going out, there are still times when you want to stay in and have a quiet night or a gathering with friends. If you have a favourite cocktail, you don’t always need to go out to your favourite bar to get it. Here’s how to recreate your favourite cocktails from home if you’re willing to put in a little bit of effort…

Find the Right Recipes

If there’s a specific cocktail that you want to recreate, you need the recipe. Of course, you could just get any generic recipe for the cocktail that you like. But if you especially love a certain cocktail from a certain bar, you might just be able to recreate that exact drink at home. Lots of bars and hotels will let you in on the secret of how to make some of their drinks. You can even find cocktail recipe books from establishments that don’t mind telling people how their cocktails are made.

Learn from the Experts

If there’s one way to learn about cocktail making, it’s to listen to the people who really know what they’re doing. You can pick up some great tips from mixologists who can share how they create the perfect cocktail. You might even consider talking to the people at your favourite bar to find out what tips and tricks they can give you. Perhaps they would even be willing to pass on one of their recipes. Attending a mixology class, or even learning from online resources, is another great way to learn more about making cocktails.

Get the Look

What your cocktails from home look like can be just as important as what they taste like. It’s just not the same if your cocktail looks very homemade when what you really want is a fancy bar cocktail. Start with a nice glass for your cocktail to ensure it looks just right. Use margarita glasses for margaritas, old fashioned glasses for negronis and a collins or other tall glass for a mojito. There aren’t exactly hard and fast rules, but the traditional glass can really give your cocktail the right feel. It makes you want to drink it, and it makes the drink recognisable too.

Practise and Experiment

If you’re trying to recreate a cocktail that you love to have while you’re out, you might not get it right the first time. Or you might get it right the first time, then find that you can’t replicate it again. It can take practice to consistently produce a cocktail how you like it, so don’t be afraid to keep practising until you can get it right. Experiment with your ingredients, proportions, and more to make a cocktail that you love.

If you miss your favourite tipples, try reproducing those cocktails from home. You might even make a cocktail that you love more than any you can buy.
