Visiting Germany for the first time? Here’s some quick tips

Germany might not be everyone’s first thought when they’re thinking about where to go on holiday. Whilst it might not have the sunny beaches that are so synonymous with British holidays, there is plenty to discover and enjoy.

What makes so Germany so special are its bustling cities like Berlin, Munich and Cologne, all of which have their own distinct personality and charm. And that’s not all! With lots of beautiful nature to soak up too, there’s something for everyone. Here are just a few great places to visit along the way.

Germany for the first time

Berlin

A modern metropolis that attracts people from all over the world, Berlin is a must-do on any German itinerary. The capital is packed with historical landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag and Checkpoint Charlie. Of course, one of the most significant points has to be the remains of the Berlin Wall which holds huge cultural significance in German history and proudly displays the socialist fraternal kiss that is famous worldwide.

Berlin is also a hotspot for partygoers. With world-famous venues like Berghain, Loophole and Kater Blau, techno-lovers will have a field day here, as well as anyone with a deep love for electronic music.

Hamburg

Another pit stop in Northern Germany has to be Hamburg. The second largest city in the country, it is a mixing pot of cultures and has many points of interest. Easily accessible with a cruise from Southampton, you can have your fill of all the magnificent concert halls, the Miniatur Wunderland – the world’s biggest model railway – and head to StandPauli bar for a funky beer in an unbeatable atmosphere.

Home also to one of the most famous Red Light Districts, it has some of the best nightlife in the whole of Germany and boasts a huge variety of music to suit every taste.

Bavarian Alps

Going way down South, you’ll find the Bavarian Alps on the border with Austria. It is home to the iconic Schloss Neuschwanstein which inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle and many scenes in the opera Tannhäuser. Towering triumphantly over its mountainous surrounds, it’s one of the most striking vistas that have people coming from all over the world.

The Alps also offer many sporting opportunities. From great hikes to mountain biking trails and skiing during the winter months, Füssen is a great starting point to access all the lakes and slopes.

Black Forest

Where the witches and magical creatures reside, Black Forest has a certain aura of mystery that makes it so intriguing for visitors. Miles upon miles of dark, luscious woods await, as well as natural thermal baths, beautiful wildlife and dozens of Michelin-star restaurants.
