Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy outdoor activities with your favourite furry friend. However, it’s important to remember that dogs can struggle to stay cool in the heat. We can take off our jackets, after all, but they can’t! To ensure their well-being and happiness during the warmer months, here are six essential tips for keeping your dog cool and content this summer as the UK enjoys one of the hottest summers on record!

Avoid Leaving Your Dog in the Car

Never leave your dog alone in a car, even for a short time, under any circumstances. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke and even death and it can all happen surprisingly fast, particularly if you forget to open a window. It’s best to leave your dog at home in a safe and cool environment, whenever possible.

Keep Them Hydrated and Fed

Proper hydration is always crucial for your dog’s well-being but particularly during hot and sunny days. Ensure they always have access to fresh water, both indoors and outdoors. A balanced and nutritious diet also helps maintain their overall health, so consider feeding them a high-quality and easily digestible sensitive dog food diet while the weather is so brutal.

Adjust Your Walking Routine

When the temperatures rise, adjust your dog’s exercise routine. Avoid walking them during the hottest parts of the day, as hot pavements can burn their paw pads and the intense heat can cause heat exhaustion. Instead, opt for early morning or very late evening walks when the temperature is cooler. This ensures a more enjoyable and safer experience for your furry companion. It’s best to not walk them at all than to walk them in any temperature above 25 degrees.

Provide Shade

Just like humans, dogs need shade to escape the sun’s intense rays. If your dogs are going to be spending the day outside, create shady areas in your garden or patio where they can rest comfortably and find some respite. Consider using umbrellas, canopies, or natural shade from trees to provide relief from direct sunlight.

Regular Grooming

Maintaining a regular grooming routine is essential for keeping your dog’s coat healthy and comfortable during the summer. Brushing helps remove excess fur and prevents matting, allowing air to circulate close to the skin. Consider giving your dog a trim if their coat is long, as this can help them stay cooler. However, be cautious not to shave them completely, as their coat provides insulation against both the heat and cold.

Get Them Wet!

Finally, playing with your dog in the water is a fun and effective way to keep them cool. Fill a small pool or use a sprinkler in your garden or take them to a dog-friendly beach or lake for a refreshing swim. Playing with water not only cools them down but also provides mental stimulation and entertainment and you’ll both enjoy the cool water and spending time together.
