An old fashioned cocktail is typically made using a Bourbon or Rye Whiskey. For this recipe, we have opted to use a Wild Turkey 101 bourbon due to its complex taste compared to other bourbons. That said, the majority of bourbon’s or rye whiskey can be used to make an old fashioned cocktail so have a look at what you’ve got in the cupboard.

To garnish, twist an orange peel over the drink and then drop into the glass. This will release the subtle oils in the peel and add a slight flavour to your drink. Some old fashioned cocktail recipes will say to muddle a sugar cube instead of sugar syrup, but that is down to preference.

Ingredients

  1. 60ml Bourbon or Rye Whiskey (We used Wild Turkey 101)
  2. 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
  3. 10ml Sugar Syrup (2:1)
  4. Splash of Soda Water
  5. Orange Peel to Garnish

Steps to Make An Old Fashion Cocktail

  1. Start by filling your mixing glass or a large tumbler with ice (you could use one end of a cocktail shaker, but don’t shake). Pour in the 60ml Bourbon or Rye Whiskey, 10ml Sugar Syrup and 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters into the glass.
  2. With a cocktail spoon stirrer, mix the liquids together with the ice until the drink has slightly diluted and has come together. If you are using granulated sugar, or a sugar cube mix until it’s dissolved.
  3. Fill your lowball glass with ice and strain your whisky mixture into it. If you would like you can add a splash of soda water at this point. Add an orange peel slice into the drink as a garnish.

Recipe Tips

Sugar syrup is simple to make and can be stored in a fridge for later use. For a 2:1 ratio, simply pour 200g caster sugar into a saucepan and pour in 100ml water. On a low heat, stir the mixture until the sugar has completed dissolved within the water. Let the mixture cool down and then use it with your cocktail recipes.

Did you know this about the old fashion cocktail?

While you may enjoy the old fashion, do you actually know where it came from? It is one of the first recorded cocktails and in 1806 the editor of the Balance and Columbian Repository in Hudson New York described it as a “potent concoction of spirits, bitters, water and sugar.” Gentleman’s club The Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky claims the old fashioned was invented there, while the first mention in print of “old fashioned cocktails” was in the Chicago Daily Tribune in 1880 before the club had even opened. Despite this, its conception is deeply rooted in the history of Louisville and as such they name it their official cocktail. Each year they celebrate “Old Fashioned Fortnight” on the first two weeks of June with a number of events and cocktail specials commemorating the tipple.
