The ‘Miracle’ Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen : Does It Live Up To The Hype?

Beauty of Joseon are a mega-popular Korean brand that launched back in 2013. Born from a desire to bring beauty techniques from the Joseon dynasty and traditional Korean herbal medicine to modern skincare, the brand is no stranger to the beauty world. Korean skincare and techniques have grown exponentially in the last few years, with the trend switching from heavy makeup looks to a more natural, healthy glow. People are more invested in the ingredients in skincare too, choosing natural elements as opposed to chemicals. One product in particular that has people shifting opinions is sunscreen.

With many popular high-street products found to contain high levels of chemicals such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and avobenzone. Homosalate and octocrylene in particular, are not safe in the amounts at which they’re currently used. With this in mind, Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen has been rocketing in popularity and we’re here to take a deeper look at the product and see if it’s really worth the hype.

What ingredients can be found in Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen?

Beauty of Joseon sunscreen is created exclusively in Korea and utilises a host of natural ingredients including green tea, vitamin E, rice extract (30%) and grain probiotics complex to help nourish the skin’s natural strength. There are medically-approved chemicals in the formula like Tinosorb M, which is what gives it its UVA and UVB ray protection. Vegan, cruelty-free and free of the majority of top allergens it’s a great choice for those that have sensitive skin.

What is the texture of Beauty of Joseon sunscreen?

This sunscreen has a lightweight cream formula that absorbs quickly without pilling or white cast. It leaves the skin with a light glowy finish and goes well under makeup. I was so impressed with the texture and how far just a little bit went when it was applied.

How to use Beauty of Joseon sunscreen?

Use Beauty of Joseon in the morning on cleansed skin or anytime you’re about to go into the sun. While it absorbs quickly, we recommend applying it at least 15 minutes before sun exposure to allow it to fully penetrate the skin. Smooth over your face and neck and reapply as needed when out and about. One thing I love about this sunscreen is how soft it makes your skin feel and that it doesn’t feel heavy or claggy. This is something I often find with sunscreens, particularly those that go on your face. I don’t want to put makeup on something heavy, but still want the same level of protection and this is something Beauty of Joseon sunscreen provides.

How good is the sun protection?

Rated a factor 50, there were rigorous SPF and PA tests completed in labs in both Korea and Spain. PA stands for ‘Protection Grade of UVA’ – the more ‘+’ after PA, the greater protection offered. According to the Beauty of Joseon website, the results are as follows:

SPF
Korean Lab : 52.5±5.8
Spain Lab : 63.1±0.6

PA
Korean Lab : UVA PF 16.1±2.4 P++++
Spain Lab : UVA PF 19 P++++

These are exceptional ratings and we found that after wearing this sunscreen, even I, a natural redhead, was protected throughout the day. I did reapply after going in the pool, but I was super impressed with how well it protected my skin.

What is the cost of Beauty of Joesen sunscreen?

There is a RRP of £18, but it’s regularly on offer in various retail outlets. In my opinion, this is a great price for a sunscreen that really works.
