Julien Macdonald brought a futuristic glimpse to London’s coveted Goldsmith’s Hall to present his AW17 collection on Saturday. Inspired by the Metropolis of Fritz Lang, the collection dazzled with sequins and sparkles, cutting architectural silhouettes with fluid lines. Cut outs and daring splits added plenty of sex-appeal to the runway, whilst sheer detailing and embroidery showcased Macdonald’s real penchant for designs which are not only unequivocally beautiful, but hold an air of mystery too.
Swarovski embellishments layered with multi-faceted coloured sequins created a three-dimensional armour-like effect across the body in homage to surrealist artist H.R Giger. One thing was made instantly clear – this is a collection not to be messed with. Men’s tailoring was adorned with surreal gunmetal panelled embroidery creating a hard and masculine look, further emphasised with stud-embellished jackets.
The colour palette for Julien Macdonald AW17 nodded towards the mood of winter, with enchanting shades of gold, black, silver, rose-gold and red. It was striking, sultry and powerful, oozing elegance with every step.
Georgia Foote stormed the runway in a powerful gown detailed with intricate geometric cut-outs, whilst model of the moment Willie Harlow closed the show. Intricate cut-outs chanelled an almost caged design, connoting a link between human and machines and the connection between them – cold but beautiful.
Julien MacDonald showcased many of his signature styles such as spider knits, haute couture gowns of embroidered tulle and sharp tailoring.
For Men, the collection was adorned with surreal gunmetal panelled embroidery, linking back to the idea of armour as a second skin. The end result was a hard and uber-masculine look when teamed with encrusted bomber jackets.
