An interview with Willemijn Verkaik the star of West-End’s Wicked

Since Wicked was first brought to our stages in 2006 in a flurry of jewelled slippers, wand waving and a real dash of good fun, Wizard of Oz fans around the world fell in love with the spin-off of the classic tale. We caught up with Willemijn Verkaik who plays Elphaba (aka the Wicked Witch of the West) to find out more about the role and her career…

“IN WICKED, People can relate to the characters, and it helps them believe in themselves and be stronger and more self-confident”

Did you always know you wanted to be an actress? Has singing and acting always been a part of your life?

I think I’ve known since I was 12 years old that I wanted to be a singer. I started to perform at school celebrations and noticed that I felt very comfortable on stage.

You’ve been playing Elphaba for the past ten years, what is it you like about this particular role so much?

This role is very challenging. It’s vocally very demanding but also when it comes to interpretation and stamina. The character is a fighter and you, as an actress, have to work very hard each show to portray her well. You can never sit back and just let it happen, you have to fight. That’s what I love about her.

Explain a typical day in your life at the moment?

Because this role takes it out of you every time, you need to make sure you get lots of rest. Sleep well and listen to your body. Eat healthy. At the moment I’m writing my own songs so I get up every day with a healthy breakfast, then work on my music for a few hours and, before I know it, it’s already time to go to the theatre.

Acting can be known as a male dominated profession, with women still being given smaller, less-leading roles. What do you think of the fact that Wicked has two very strong females as the lead parts?

It’s fantastic and I’ve noticed the show does a lot to not only women but everyone actually. People can relate to the characters, especially Elphaba and it helps them believe in themselves and be stronger and more self-confident.

Is there a particular role or character you would like to play next? Where do you see your career going?

I’ve been playing a lot of different roles. Apart from Elphaba I have for instance played Kala in Tarzan, Donna in Mamma Mia and Amneris in Aida. So I would really love it if I could create a role in a new production. That would be such an amazing challenge and opportunity.

What has been your career highlight?

Playing Elphaba on Broadway and in the West End.

One piece of advice you would tell your teenage self?

Don’t worry, it will all fall into place.

One piece of advice for any aspiring actors?

Don’t be afraid to learn and make mistakes. Don’t sit in a corner waiting for it to come to you, but also don’t think you know it all. All roles and productions come with new exciting challenges and it’s a continuous learning curve.

When in London, where is your favourite place to go?

My life is very hectic so I love going to the park. Watching the little squirrels and birds, it helps me relax.

Wicked is currently showing at the Apollo Theatre Victoria. You can find more information on Wicked, Willemijn Verkaik and book your tickets here.
