DS Automobiles brings Events in the Sky to London for a meal unlike anything you’ve ever experienced – London in the Sky …
Oh how we’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall the day someone pitched the idea to suspend three tables of twenty two people from a crane, 100ft in the air and feed them Michelin star standard food. But as with most utterly mad ideas, they are usually the best and when it comes to Events in the Sky, it couldn’t be better.
London in the Sky was brought to London for the first time this July, by DS Automobiles and offered a chance to dine on delicious food high in the sky, as well as take a look at some of the new car models. It was based in London’s South Bank, so a central point easy to access from all areas of the city and somewhere that promised beautiful views no matter which way you looked. The experience began with a G&T in a large tent down below where you can watch diners in the group before you being raised into the sky and really feel the trepidation for your own flight build.

Once the time for our flight rolled around, we were taken to the table and told to stand behind a chair before being strapped in. Word of advice, be sure to go to the toilet before you are seated as once you’re in the sky there’s no chance to go before the end of the experience! As the table began to rise I was glad I’d had the G&T to calm my nerves, but I was also surprised at just how smooth it was. In fact were it not for the sights around me, I’d barely know we were moving.
The concept of the Events in the sky experience is brilliant, with chefs in the centre preparing your meal in front of your eyes. Our menu was designed by Chef Lee Westcott, known for creating stunning and imaginative plates with remarkable depth of flavour. He did not disappoint. Our menu commenced with a starter of sea trout, heritage tomatoes, gooseberry & green almond (my fish was substituted for a goats cheese). We were poured the most deliciously crisp white wine as an accompaniment and as we began to dig in, the sun started to set and shards of colour bounced off the usually grey skyline of London. Shades of burning reds and oranges gleamed and a faint breeze rippled through the air. The atmosphere was electric, the adrenaline from such an experience heightening all the senses, making the food taste better, the sights look better and the conversation flow effortlessly.
The second course was beef carpaccio with turnip, mushroom & black garlic. Again, the flavours were delicious and it was a real testament to just how good the food is that it can be prepared suspended 100ft in the air and still taste utterly divine. Course three was the main – Lamb, asparagus, peas & nettles. The lamb was tender and juicy and the accompanying vegetables crisp and flavoursome to the palette.
For dessert we were lowered back to the ground as it needed to be kept fresh and refrigerated. It turned out to be a divine blend of fat, ripe strawberries, chocolate mousse, vanilla sorbet and a strawberry compote with wild flowers.
A perfect blend of sharp, sweet, soft and smooth – it was a real highlight to the meal. We were risen once more to the sky as we ate and this time our table was rotated to offer another angle of views to the city. From Tower Bridge to the Shard to The London Eye and The Gherkin, London’s main landmarks were all laid out below for us to see and admire. This took the concept of dining above the city and kicked it completely out the water. Rooftop bars that used to be so impressive now seem tame and it set a real food standard for just how far culinary levels can be pushed.
London in the sky it offers something so unique, so exciting and so relaxing it is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced and anything you’ll likely experience again. It gets the adrenaline pumping, the taste buds tingling, the eyes widening and offers a chance to see the city like you’ve never seen it before.
