The Millennials Travel List – 2018’s most popular travel destinations

Travel is more popular now than ever, particularly with millennials. Here are the top destinations that should be on any millennials list…

The popularity of travel destinations changes year after year and as soon as one traveller finds a great spot, it’s not long before others follow suit. Sometimes, travel destinations become popular because of films and TV. For instance, when Danny Boyle’s The Beach was released in 2000, the youth of that period all flocked to the backpacker haven of Khao San Road in Bangkok. These days, it’s all about ticking off things from a bucket list and enjoying as many once in a lifetime experiences as possible. Of course, the need to travel far and wide to do so is still strong.

Lottoland recently conducted a survey to see what the current desirable holiday locations are among millennials in 2018. According to the survey, seeing the Northern Lights is almost essential. Otherwise known as aurora borealis, this is an amazing natural light display in the Earth’s sky. This eerie and almost unbelievable occurrence can be seen from a number of different locations including Norway, Iceland, Finland and Scotland. If you don’t see this before you die, you have certainly missed out! That’s why this is an absolute must for millennials.

Did you know that spending money on unique experiences is a better way to achieve happiness than buying things? According to psychology professor Thomas Gilovich, buying things is fun for a short time, but events like bungee jumping and travelling provide joy which can last for years. The Lottoland study found that 57 per cent of people thought that experiences were better than things and that people were twice as likely to regret not buying experiences instead of tangible items.

The Grand Canyon is another place high up on the list of top travel destinations and this is a spot that has attracted backpackers and tourists for years. The 277-mile-long, 18-mile-wide canyon is one of the most jaw-dropping sites on Earth and it attracts around 5 million visitors each year. This makes it one of the world’s premier natural attractions alongside other spots like the Niagara Falls.

Aside from these epic natural attractions, there are certain cities across the globe that are attracting a high number of millennials. For instance, Lisbon is now being touted as one of the best places for the younger generation to visit in the coming years. The Portuguese capital offers some of the most attractive and unique architecture in the world and there are some unmissable historical locations and museums as well. In addition to all these things, there are cool options for chilling such as the well-kept beaches and tropical islands. Holidaymakers can even go scuba diving – the city really has it all.

Millennials are still keen to visit the classic tourist spots such as the Grand Canyon, but there are some new up-and-coming travel destinations for this generation. Aside from Lisbon, the youth of today are also expected to travel in high numbers to Los Angeles in California and Ann Arbor in Michigan – all must see spots on a millennials travel list.
