Recent years have seen a rekindled love of period properties, with many shunning “boxy” new builds for more traditional design. With their beautiful, individual features, sweeping staircases and plenty of character, it’s clear to see just why they’re so popular. If you have a period property and feel you’re not making the most of it, or simply want to give your home a refresh, here are our top design tricks for your period home…
Retain and refresh original features
Whether it’s a window cove, a feature staircase or a fireplace, try to repair and retain these features to keep the character. Some houses do require modifications whether for young children or elderly relatives, but there are many ways you can still work around keeping your home looking as it should. You can get beautiful fire grates to protect children from open fireplaces, or install curved stairlifts for the elderly even if you have a period-style curved staircase.
Keep it light
Period style homes work well with lots of colours, however, a light colour scheme is a great idea as it will look particularly sleek. Fresh neutrals and white shades make the most of natural light and allow the period style accents and accessories personalities to really shine through. Make the most of darker, wood flooring and light curtains or blinds to enhance the colour.
Repair or replicate original flooring
Many original period style properties come with hardwood flooring or statement tiles. Try peeling back your old carpets and see if beneath there is an ornate flooring you can restore. If not, why not invest in traditional style parquetry design flooring or wooden flooring to replicate what would have been. Pair it with some cosy rugs and you’re good to go!
Mix modern elements with traditional
When you have a period-style property it can be tempting to stick to the more traditional design elements. However, by mixing with contemporary accessories and furnishings you will create an effortlessly sophisticated and stylish space. Modern vases, rugs and contemporary art will all look great in a period style property. If you have high ceilings, invest in a modern statement chandelier or lighting feature, it will really elevate the space.
