When we think of winter holidays, the first thing that comes to mind is snow-covered mountains and skilful skiers. In fact, the first ever Winter Olympics saw Nordic skiing top the bill back in 1924, accompanied by other classic winter pursuits such as skating and ice hockey.
However, skiing isn’t for everyone. If you’ve always wanted to visit the world’s winter wonderlands but try something different, there are plenty of alternative activities to enjoy. Here’s a look at some of the things you can attempt on your winter 2020 getaway
Dog sledding – Norway
Whether you hop on for one day or you stay a little longer, there are different dog sledding holidays and activities available at locations throughout Norway. You can try your hand at mushing or take a seat and enjoy the ride as the stunning landscapes of this magical country whizz by.

See the Northern Lights – Icelend
For a truly sublime experience, venture to Iceland and look up the skies to enjoy spectacular views of the Northern Lights. To get the best views, take a guided tour, where you will journey past waterfalls, see icebergs and black volcanic sand before being led to the perfect vantage point.
For the ultimate experience, be sure to visit between November and March. These are the months when you’re most likely to catch a glimpse of this awesome lightshow.
See the snow monkeys – Japan
Jigokudani wild monkey park in Japan is thought to be the only place in the world where you can see snow monkeys in the wild. Here, you can see them bathe in the natural hot springs to keep toasty during the cold winters that take place in this mountainous region. After a walk up the mountain to the springs, you’ll be able to get close to these red-faced macaques and see them in their natural habitat.

Build an igloo – Canada
While Whistler in Canada is famous for its ski scene, it’s here that you can also build your own fort of ice. Guides will tell you the history of the ancient art of igloo building before you take charge and begin assembling the ice blocks into position. Although you’ll be shown how to build an igloo before attempting building your own, it’s down to you to make it cosy because as part of this experience, you’ll be sleeping in it too.
