Date:

Staycations are set to be the holiday of 2021. If you and your family are looking to go camping, here are some top tips for hiring a campervan…

Off on your hols? What are your options? You could jet off to some exotic location with endless beaches and park yourself in a high priced hotel. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, the rest of the herd thinks so too. So, what’s the alternative? Maybe a holiday closer to home and one that you can actually afford. Maybe do a bit of touring in your own backyard. Although a small island, Britain has many wonderful places to visit. If you don’t want to be tied down to one resort or place, then you can move from place to place. The question is how? The family car may be a bit cramped, so the sensible alternative is to hire a campervan.

The Benefits

The most obvious benefit is mobility. The campervan trend started in earnest way back in the 50s and it hasn’t stopped yet. If you prefer to roam instead of being stationary, then a campervan is the ideal choice.

An average family can fit into and live in them for short periods quite comfortably. Campsites abound and most have the amenities you need that you can’t cart around in your vehicle. No need to sweat about hotel reservations either.

Obviously, you aren’t required to stay within the bounds of the British Isles. You can take your campervan over to the continent too. Foreign travel is just as easy, although this may entail a different kind of insurance so check out campervan insurance cost for going over to the continent. It’s best to check that out with your broker or the campervan rental agency.

  • If you want to go retro and are feeling a bit nostalgic, you can actually find rental agencies that hire out the old-style VW campervans. These iconic vehicles are the first image that pops into our minds when we think of campervans. Of course, there are much more modern versions nowadays.
  • Despite the freedom of having a campervan, it is illegal to just stop and park anywhere in most British counties. Fortunately, that isn’t a real problem as you can find a camping site almost anywhere and at reasonable prices.
  • There’s no need for a special driving license in the UK to drive a campervan. Any license that entitles you to drive category B vehicles will suffice. It just needs to be full and current.
  • Most of the campervan rental agencies require the driver to have a minimum of 21 years of age. Also, the driver needs to have held a license for between 2-5 years. Additional insurance for younger drivers may be required. Each hire firm has its own policy.
  • Campervan trips are usually there and back. You return the van back to the branch of the hire firm you picked it up from. If you want to take a one-way trip, some hire firms will accommodate you. Again, it a question enquiring which do.

What are you waiting for?

If you’ve got the bug for campervan holidays nothing beats owning your own. Trial a few hires but consider the option of owning your own campervan one day. A holiday in a campervan is an experience that you will never forget.
