Review: NYX Hotel Holborn – A city staycation with plenty of razzle dazzle

The NYX Hotel Holborn offers all you could need for a break in the city. It’s staycationing with a good dose of razzle-dazzle thrown in…

It’s a dull grey day as I jump off the bus in Holborn ready to make my way to the newly opened NYX hotel. It is one of those days where the city feels that little more gloomy and I find myself longing for languid summer days. I cross the road and the NYX Hotel Holborn instantly comes into view, standing out by a riotously colourful mural decorating a large slice of the building. I step inside, and this colourful theme continues. I take a slow walk to the check-in desk as I drink it all in. It feels cosy, inviting, and like a dose of good fun. Pop art adorns the walls, neon signs greet me and panes of glass in all shades of the rainbow reflect the sunlight through large front windows. Music plays and people sit in the restaurant at the front of the hotel, sipping on cocktails, chatting and relaxing. After spending too many months in lockdown, hotel stays are that bit more special now, reminding us that a big world exists out of the walls of our city apartment.

Check-in is quick and efficient and we make our way to our room, passing some vintage arcade games and a mini photo booth on the way. The corridors are eclectic, contemporary and interesting. The walls and floor are dark in colour, with large, quirky portraits adorning the space.

There are 213 rooms in the hotel and we aren’t disappointed. We are greeted with a modern, well-designed space packed with character. It is relatively compact but contains everything you need for a base in the city centre. The beds are large and wonderfully comfortable, there is a large TV for catching up on a film at the end of a busy day and a well-stocked mini bar should you decide to indulge in a drink or snack while you relax. The bathroom, again, is impeccably decorated with a large rain shower and sink.

NYX Hotel Holborn Dining wise, the bar and restaurant on the ground floor is the perfect spot to indulge in some great food and drink, while also people watching the bustling streets just beyond. You can sink into sumptuously soft chairs, admire the decor, soak in the atmosphere and know you’re in safe hands. We ate our way through sharing nachos, stacked with toppings and melted cheese, a delicious steak with fries and black cabbage and a chocolate arctic roll. The menu isn’t overly complex but is all the better for this. Each dish tastes delicious and after months of home-cooked food, it is a reprieve to tuck into something that I know I couldn’t have cooked myself. We wind the evening down with a glass of champagne in the bar before heading back up to one of the best nights sleep I’ve had in a long time.

Before leaving the NYX Hotel London Holborn, don’t forget to check out their spa. You can either indulge in a treatment or just go for a dip in the pool and to relax in the sauna. It is an underground space set in the basement of the hotel and is decorated with the same taste as the rest of the hotel. Whether you head for a leisurely afternoon swim or for a massage to start your day, you won’t be disappointed.
