Elbow Cay

The Bahamas have a rich history and this is effortlessly blended in Elbow Cay. This sandy island was originally populated in 1785 by British loyalists fleeing from the newly independent America. These inhabitants survived by fishing, building boats and salvaging.

In the main village of Hope Town stands a 120-foot lighthouse with iconic red and white stripes. This lighthouse was built in the 1800s and has stood the test of time. Hope Town is also a yachter’s paradise with masts as far as the eye can see. This gives you the option to arrange snorkelling and diving trips to the local coral reefs.

Bimini

Bimini was the go-to holiday spot for Ernest Hemingway and is said to have been the place where he wrote To Have and Have Not and Islands in the Stream. It is easy to see why writers and artists alike have been inspired by the beautiful Bimini.

Bimini is surrounded by some incredible marine life with visitors regularly spotting hammerhead sharks, dolphins and several other unique creatures that live among the mangrove trees. Couples that enjoy fishing together should head to Bimini as it is considered the fishing capital of the world by some.

Lucayan National Park

On Grand Bahama sits Lucayan National Park. This vast area of protected wilderness is home to a variety of animal inhabitants, including racoons and hummingbirds.

The edge of the National Park is covered by mangrove trees and also a hidden cave network. These are perfect for exploring safely to create a magical experience.

Ardastra Gardens

If you are looking for a day out then add Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Park to your to-do list. Home to a number of native animals, the zoo allows you to experience animals that you may not find in UK zoos.

You can break the day up by wandering through the beautiful gardens in the sun, breathing in the sweet smells of the different flowers.

The Exumas

The Exumas are home to one of the most iconic symbols of the Bahamas – swimming pigs. These friendly swine can be found on Rose Island which is a 25-minute boat ride from Nassau. Rose Island is also accessible from Miami as well, so you do not have to be in the Bahamas to enjoy this experience.

As with many animals, the way to the pigs’ heart is food. You are allowed to bring certain foods to tempt the pigs with. A good tip is to try and visit on an overcast day early in the morning. This should be a bit quieter and allow you plenty of uninterrupted piggy time.
