We catch up with Ieva Eglite, new talent and one to watch…
Ieva was born in Latvia and raised in a very creative environment. From a young age her mother, artist and teacher at local art school directed her towards art, design and creativity. She said she had always known she would pursue a career in this field and could never imagine herself doing anything else.
For two years after graduating Riga School of Design and Art she was working as a sportswear designer and got an opportunity to design Latvian National Women’s League in Lacrosse uniforms for European Championship 2011. Needing a challenge and something to aim for, she decided to come to London and study fashion design further in Regent’s University London.
Tell us a bit about your final collection:
My final collection “Meltdown” is inspired by Chernobyl nuclear accident. It is a tribute to those who sacrificed to this disaster. “Meltdown” is a combination of contrasts – light and heavy; beautiful and destructed; a shelter, yet revealing. It consists of six coats and six dresses for Fall/Winter season.
How would you describe your style?
I see fashion as a form of art where designer is a painter an body is a blank canvas. I even feel responsibility to tell a story with my designs. I get a lot of influence from avant-garde designs, but I always manage to keep mine commercial and entirely functional.
Who’s your fashion icon and why?
I find this question really hard to answer. We all change with our experiences and fashion icons rarely change the same direction. I’ve never found anyone that left such impact on me to call them my icons. I am still in search of my fashion icon.
Where would you like to be in five years?
I want to have my own studio. I wan to be creative and able to express myself and my ideas and lack of space can be a big issue.
Where is your favourite place to go in London and why?
I think I might be in love with London as a whole. Every place has its own personality and these personalities cannot be compared. I find it amazing how place with so many contrasts can exist and no matter where I go, I always feel lie I belong. It’s one of worlds most creative cities. That’s why I chose London to continue with my fashion education.
