Coming to the Surface: Becoming Woke in Your Everyday Life

The idea of becoming woke is not just about being aware of racism and social injustice, you can apply the idea of being woke as a way to wake up in your own life. On a political level, becoming woke is a wonderful thing because it starts to make us aware of injustice, and fight for truth and equality. But it’s also something that can help us in a personal sense. Here are some things to consider if you are looking to become more woke in a personal way.

Becoming More Environmentally Aware

It’s easy to talk about the importance of looking after the planet, but it’s another thing to actually follow through with it. The important thing is to begin small. You can start by recycling, and gradually build up your knowledge, so you can see how your life can become more ethical. For example, you may find that your fashion choices are part of fast fashion, in which case, you may look at more ethical fashion choices. When you start to become more conscious of how you impact the planet, you will be able to take the steps to rectify your carbon footprint. After all, we are the only person we truly have control over.

Becoming More Politically Focused

For many people, it is something that starts early on in life. But there are people who get older and find they do not have any real interest in politics. But what tends to happen is that as you get older, you become more cognizant of the things that impact your life. They say that as we get older, we become more conservative in our beliefs. This could very well be due to being more comfortable. If you want to become more politically aware, you need to start opening your eyes to the terrible injustices in the world. You can start by reading the news more, but also looking at what you truly believe in. And this could be about what goes on at your front door. Because it’s important to remember that being politically aware is not necessarily about having knowledge of what goes on in other countries, but being more community-minded can help you make a big difference.

Becoming Aware of Your Attitudes to Money and Possessions

Sometimes, we can look around at the things that we have, and ask ourselves “what have we got this for?” We can spend our entire lives working to line somebody else’s pockets, and we start to realise that we can get more out of life with less. This is where potentially embracing minimalism could make a massive difference to the quality of your life. Minimalism is a way of life that means living with less, so you start to see the futility of having more and more stuff. Minimalism can be a way to make your home more peaceful, but it can be a way to help you save money, and make a massive difference to your overall attitudes.

Becoming woke is something that we can go through as a way of coming to the surface after burying our heads underwater, but there are little ways that we can wake up to our own personal injustices as well.
