After what has been a tumultuous 8 seasons, Game of Thrones has come to an end. In what is set to go down in history as one of the most popular television dramas of all time, many have been left wondering just what they’re going to do with their lives without their regular GOT fix. But have no fear, for you can live (the best bits of) Game of Thrones yourself in one of the countries where much of the show was filmed – Croatia. A collection of beautiful regions and islands with everything from rugged mountain and exotic white sand beaches to an intriguing history, Croatia is the perfect destination for fans of the show who want to follow the footsteps of their favourite characters. Here are our top three Game of Thrones destinations in Croatia you need to visit…

Visit King’s landing in Dubrovnik…

Game of Thrones CroatiaDubrovnik’s Southern city is a picturesque location peering out onto the Adriatic waters and is famous for being the setting of King’s Landing. Featured heavily at Fame of Throne’s fictitious Westeros, there are many chances for you to explore and take photos in key sites from the show. If you’re looking to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site by foot, there are guided city tours available. We recommend you walk up to the imposing Fort Lovrijenac for a panoramic view and take a cable car to the peak at Mount Srd in just five minutes to enjoy a near birds-eye perspective of the city. When you’re done exploring, make sure you rest your feet and indulge in some delicious Croatian delicacies and drinks.

See the City of Qarth in Lokrum…

Game of Thrones CroatiaSecond on our list of Game of Thrones destinations in Croatia A short ten-minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik is the forested island of Lokrum – most famously used as a stand-in for the city of Qarth near the Jade Sea which was visited by Daenerys Targaryen in season two. Be sure to visit the Benedectine Monastery (which we’re sure you’ll recognise from the show!) Lokrum is a beautiful destination to enjoy a relaxing stroll and off-the-beaten track experience where you can wander the 1.5 mile long islet by foot. Be sure to enjoy quaint stop off points and take time to relax on the white sands that surround the island. As well as daily ferry access between Lokrum and the mainland, you can also take part in a kayaking tour of the island that involves paddling over to the isle and experiencing it from the water.

Experience the City of Meereen in Split…

Game of Thrones CroatiaSplit, Croatia’s second largest city is located along the coast of the Adriatic sea and is a mix of historical architecture and modern life. The Klis Fortress is well worth a visit for it was used as the fictional city of Meereen in Game of Thrones. We recommend heading to the summit at sunset for the ultimate view of the coast. As well as this landmark, be sure to enjoy the burgeoning gastronomy scene in the city, and take a day trip to some of Split’s surrounding islands and blue caves for a spot of snorkelling.

There are so many places to explore and things to do in Croatia for any Game of Thrones fan – why not travel between them all? If you get a chance, Montenegro is a beautiful destination with many wonderful hotels such as this one in Kotor.
