But, whilst you are wondering if the entire thing is a tribute to the famous wizarding school, it is only the basement floor – where the rooms are hidden by a secret magical bookcase. The rest of the hotel is an ideal destination for non-magic folk, encapsulating the feel of a traditional boutique Hotel, with sleek, contemporary decor that is both tasteful and homey, a spacious reception room and a welcoming dining area.
As we arrive on a bitterly cold winter’s afternoon, the cosy interior is a warm respite from London’s weather, the warm, homey feel drawing us in at once. The first thing we are impressed with is the character of the Hotel, it feels lived in, exciting and it also feels reassuring and a bit like home.
Our room is on the second floor at the front of the Hotel. The walls are a sultry midnight blue and light floods in from two large windows overlooking the street below, enveloping everything in a diluted haze.
The room isn’t particularly large, but for what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. A bright yellow phone sits on the nightstand, blooming flowers adorn a period-style fireplace and vibrant orange cushions lie upon a white bedspread.
A tartan blanket on the bed and an antler sculpture on the wall add a rustic vibe, taking you from the streets of south London and whisking you to weekend spent by a lake in a countryside lodge. The bathroom is small, but compact. A downside is no bath, but the shower is powerful and refreshing. The White Company toiletries are a welcome addition.
e went on a tour of the magical chambers in the basement and they really are a must for any wizarding fan. Each room is reminiscent of the rooms in the famous films, complete with trunks under the beds and the red wall hangings! And in case you can’t get enough of the magic, they also provide copies of the books for you to read.”
As well as double and twin rooms there is also the family room, ideal for bringing the kids on a memorable trip to the city.
Being a B&B, The Georgian House Hotel makes up for not serving dinner by serving a breakfast that really blows the lid off of most early morning meals. The dining area is larger than it looks and is decorated well. It has a spacious, separate area for board meetings and skylights to flood natural light from the streets above.
My partner opted for the full English and I, in a bid to be healthy, chose the muesli. My muesli was delicious, full of flavours and there was plenty of it, however I will admit I experienced definite food envy when my partner’s plate piled with fat sausages, golden eggs, crispy hash browns and a generous few slices of bacon was set down. He proudly declared it one of the best full English’s he has ever eaten.
As well as breakfast, the Pantry within the Georgian House Hotel also offers a delicious afternoon tea. Packed with delicious sandwiches, fat, warm scones and a whole range of cakes it’s worth going just for this, even if you don’t stay in the Hotel.
