With summer in full(ish) swing, it’s got us thinking ahead to long lazy days with friends. Whether you’re planning a big birthday bash or you missed out on tickets to some of the big festivals, a Hawaiian-themed party is the perfect way to celebrate any occasion – and will instantly bring those summer vibes.
Here are our top tips to ensure your Hawaiian-themed party isn’t a wash-out.
Decoration
When you think Hawaiian theme, you think bright pops of colour, with plenty of greenery. Flower decorations and oversized palm prints should be top of your decoration wish list.
If you’re looking to create a classy affair, invest in real plants and flowers and keep the rest of the décor neutral with natural accessories like jute rugs and linen napkins. And if the weather is playing ball, host the party outside over sunset and string fairy lights around the garden with oversized outdoor cushions – and maybe add a sandpit or two!
Dress-code
Is it a Hawaiian-themed party without a grass skirt and a lei? If you’re going for a full-on Hawaiian theme, you could ask guests to where their jazziest Hawaiian shirts or swimsuits.
Or if you think fancy dress is a little tacky – then perhaps suggest a summer dress code similar to the races. Where women wear summer dresses and men wear linen suits or chinos.
Food and Drinks
Refreshments can make or break a party, and when you’re throwing a themed party you want the food and drinks to reflect that theme.
Hawaiian food has a fresh and tropical feel, so plenty of exotic fruits, large salads, and of course some sort of hog roast (or BBQ) is a must.
As for the drinks, you can’t go wrong with an independently brewed beer like Kona Brewery Beers. Making the perfect pairing for a summer party, you could also offer Hawaiian-themed cocktails, with the prerequisite paper umbrella!
Music
Hawaiian mele music is the traditional sound of the islands. Featuring rhythmical chanting, the melodies are truly mesmerising and will be the perfect soundtrack to your party.
As the sun sets, consider putting on a summer-themed party playlist to get your guests dancing. You can either create your own playlist or use YouTube or Spotify for some pre-made playlists.
Entertainment
Liven up your party with some Hawaiian-themed entertainment. Hula dancing and limbo are a must, but why not go retro and add a coconut shy? For a creative craft, guests could make their own lei to match their outfit, or you could have a cocktail making stand with tropical flavours.
