Head down to Makers House: Burberry for an unforgettable experience
Makers House is holding a celebration of Burberry’s new collection and the iconic artist who inspired it – Henry Moore.
Inspiration and Process combines high fashion and craft and includes some of his most famous sculptures alongside working models and maquettes.
Inspired by the scale and form of Henry Moore’s elemental sculptures and created using unique constructions, each design is handmade and available to special order. We saw Moore’s sculptures cleverly integrated into the clothing with lots of oval shapes, asymmetrical lines, materials that reflect Moore’s and even references to Moore’s own workwear. Using sculpture as his main inspiration, Bailey’s collection has cleverly integrated the work and key shapes of Moore whilst still keeping it wearable for everyday.
The sculptures were dotted around the room on both floors, with the collection weaving around it, so it was easy to compare Moore’s work to Bailey’s. There was an extensive design process involving sketches, polaroids, mood images and knit and denim samples to bring together the ideas for the collection. ‘Henry Moore’s art has always loomed large in my imagination.’ Christopher Bailey said. He has childhood memories of spending time with Moore’s work in a sculpture park, so there is a personal connection between the both of them.
There were 72 individual stunning capes at the exhibition all made from fascinating materials such as shells, coiled string, feathers and even crystal, with more conventional materials such as knit coming together in innovative ways to represent ‘a study on the shoulder’. It was nice to be able to wander through the collection as they were set out in a way that we can see all the angles. Hours can be spent here looking at every detail of each outfit as there is so much to see. Books of Henry Moore’s work are also available to have a browse through.
