We catch up with the new talent Mercy Wyett
Having recently just presented her final year collection in the Regent’s Graduate Fashion Show, Mercy is currently preparing to work on a short film creating the look for the roles and working closely with the director and writer to ensure the costume / styling are used to help tell the story. She would like to enter the world of fashion in the area of styling both in film and publishing – (specifically fashion and lifestyle magazines.)
Tell us a bit about your final collection:
The collection is called Dark Morning Haze and aimed to embody the essence of a women who finds comfort in the night. It is where she prefers to live; moving through a series of smoke-filled rooms as if each scene was the same. Guitars being strummed at the hands of legends play through the speakers, setting the scene for the night’s events. The collection lives in her, it is the air from her lungs that gives Dark Morning Haze.
Alternatively- my collection was based around this idea/ feeling of this women- this night explorer and enjoyer of music, London and people. I just wanted to portray the women who excite and intrigues me. I felt the best way to explore ‘her’ was in a simple contemporary ready to wear collection, keeping everything black with hints of texture and bits of rock n roll glam but essentially it was her skin and her style that I wanted to be seen.
How would you describe your style?
I believe my style as a designer is inspired by myself, my lifestyle, London and the people I interact with. It is very personal in the sense that it is driven by a purely selfish desire to design something that emulates my own personal style. Something that me and my friends would want to wear.
Who’s your fashion icon and why?
My Fashion Icon is probably women like Marianne Faithful and Anita Pallenberg who were all about exploring ‘dressing up’ and having an eclectic style. They were just so cool.
Where would you like to be in five years?
I can’t say exactly where I would like to be in five years as so much can happen between now and then, but hopefully working on interesting projects as a stylist and being able to explore the world as I go.
I also think just being employed to do what I love would be a fab place to be in five years time.
Where is your favourite place to go in London and why?
I have grown up visiting Portobello road market almost every weekend so I think I would say there. It is just such an interesting place – the hustle and bustle of the vintage market stalls stationed on the cobbled streets and the eclectic mix of people that are selling and buying things. It is just so full of quirky styles that you can so easily take notes and leave with at least five new style tips- it inspires me every time I go.
