Edward Enninful is leaving his current position of fashion and creative director at W Magazine to be crowned the Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue.

Taking over the helm from Alexandra Shulman, Edward Enninful will step up to the position on August the 1st of this year.

Condé Nast International named the hip, yet distinguished stylist today, marking the second consecutive time that a major Vogue has named a man to edit the most important women’s fashion magazine in their respective countries. Vogue Italia announced Emanuele Farneti as their Editor-in-Chief in January of this year. It also marks him as the first male Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue in history.

Announcing his decision, Condé Nast International chairman and chief executive Jonathan Newhouse praised Enninful as “an influential figure in the communities of fashion, Hollywood and music which shape the cultural zeitgeist.”

“By virtue of his talent and experience, Edward is supremely prepared to assume the responsibility of British Vogue,” added Newhouse.

Edward Enninful was born in Ghana and spent his childhood in London where at ages 16 his fashion career commenced following being model-scouted. Throughout his youth he had dreamt of being a lawyer, a rare goal for a fashionista. He soon made acquaintance with the founders of i-D magazine, Trish and Terry Jones and started to assist with the publication, earning himself the title of the youngest ever fashion director for an international publication when he was promoted not long after at the age of just 18. His career has now seen him work for Italian Vogue, American Vogue and most recently W Magazine, as well as being a consultant on countless high fashion campaigns. His career has also earnt him an OBE, a rare feat for an editor entering the top editorial position in UK fashion.
