Decorating your nursery is one of the most fun aspects of your pregnancy. It feels great to get the room looking just like you want it in anticipation of your new arrival. Yet choosing the perfect nursery wallpaper can feel like a bit of a minefield. There are so many choices out there that you might be wondering just where to begin. This is why we have put together a piece on our top tips and inspiration that should hopefully get you started.
How to choose nursery wallpaper – top tips
Choosing your nursery wallpaper is a personal decision and not one that you want to rush into. Here are some top tips to help you make the best choice.
Think about your nursery theme
Every nursery needs a theme, whether this is something specific or more vague, it helps to tie everything together. There are a host of popular nursery themes from Jungle to Winnie the Pooh. Take this into account when choosing your nursery wallpaper and find something that fits. You could opt for a wallpaper that encapsulates it to the tee, or just something that is along the same lines. The choice is yours.
Consider what you want to spend
Having a baby is expensive and that’s why you need to budget as you go. This is particularly true if it’s your first baby and you are having to get everything from scratch. From the pram to the crib, to clothes and everything in between you can spend a lot. When thinking of nursery wallpaper consider how much you want to spend and set a budget for this from the off.
Decide if you want something permanent or not
If you live in a rented apartment or house, you might not be able to decorate with anything permanent. Luckily, there are a host of non-permanent wallpapers that you can purchase for your nursery. These stick on the walls and can be easily peeled off without leaving a trace behind. This is also useful if you aren’t sure whether you want to move the rooms around or redecorate after a few months. It could also be used if you are planning on moving soon and want to bring the paper with you. It can be reused more than once!
Consider if you want to paper all the walls
Another decision you need to make is if you want to paper all the walls in your baby’s nursery or just one or some of them. You could opt for a feature wall, or you might decide you want the whole lot papered. Look at other examples such as on Pinterest and make a decision based on what you prefer. It can be cheaper to do a feature wall as you won’t need to buy as much paper.
Try samples first
Don’t rush into anything when choosing your nursery wallpaper. Instead, it’s a good idea to get some samples so that you can see how they fit with the room. It’s a good idea to get at least three different samples as what you might like online could look totally different in person. The light of the room and the size of the space can make a real difference.
What tools do you need to put up the nursery wallpaper?
If you have never put wallpaper up before, you might wonder just what is needed in order to do this. The tools we recommend are:
- Wallpaper paste/adhesive
- A paste brush or roller
- A knife to cut off the edges
- A tape measure
- A sponge and bucket for water
- A spirit level
