Pulitzer Amsterdam Hotel Review – Classic, Chic and Utterly Unforgettable

The Pulitzer Amsterdam Hotel – a truly special gem in the city…

Amsterdam is a city doused in charm, with a chilled atmosphere, friendly vibe and beautiful architecture to go with it. It is a city that is as vibrant and exciting as London, yet without the overbearing hustle and bustle. It’s calm, it’s relaxing and it offers more than you could ask for on a city break. And when looking for somewhere to stay, there’s nowhere we could recommend more than the Pulitzer Amsterdam.

Pulitzer Amsterdam Hotel Review

Nestled in the Prisengracht region of the city, it is right in the midst of everything, yet far enough out you don’t feel hemmed in. It is walking distance from everything you could possibly want to visit in Amsterdam – from the flower market and the red light district, to the museums and Anne Frank’s House. It’s such tempting a location infact, you almost don’t want to sleep for fear of missing an inch of what this exciting city has to hold. This bon vivieur’s playground of all-hours exploring and unexpected nights out, of stumbling across a super cool bar or club after hours or a new nook and cranny with shops and cafes during the day. It’s an area you feel excited to wake up in, where you instantly feel the spirit of Amsterdam and can eat a leisurely breakfast while the sun puddles upon the surface of the canal just beyond the window.

The Hotel

The Pulitzer is made of an intricate maze of 25 connecting Golden Age canal houses. Due to this, it’s relatively easy to walk straight past; its facade is discreet, set among the other period townhouses of the canal, giving hotel guests plenty of privacy. As soon as you set foot inside however, the discreet front is long forgotten. You walk into a bloom of flowers, filling the lobby with bursts of colours and deliciously floral fragrances.

Pulitzer Amsterdam Hotel ReviewThe hotel is contemporary in style, married with classical twists. A library to the left whispers of a historical past, with squishy armchairs begging to be sat upon and hundreds of books longing to be thumbed through. Staff are friendly and efficient and as we are led to our room we crane our necks trying to look at everything all at once. For there is so much to see within the Pulitzer Amsterdam. A courtyard accessible through a large mostly glass corridor seeps light into the hotel and is home to a rustic swing chair set ideal for relaxing when the sun shines.Pulitzer Amsterdam Hotel Review

The room

We are led up a winding staircase and to our room. It is bright airy and beautiful, with a whole host of period and modern features. The bed is home to a plump duvet and fat pillows – (and hands down offered the best and most comfortable sleep I have ever had of my life.)

A futon and footstool sits to the end and a writing desk complete with flip up mirror makes for an ideal spot to work or do your hair and makeup before a night out. A retro style phone sits on a bedside table and the desk holds a beautiful tea set and puncture repair kit (a nice touch being the city of bikes!) There are 225 rooms in the Pulitzer Hotel Amsterdam and each and every room and suite is unique and part of the exceptional heritage of Pulitzer’s canal houses.

Dining

During your stay at the Pulitzer Amsterdam, be sure to take some time to dine at both the Hotels restaurants. Jansz is the more fine-dining of the two, an effortless yet upscale all-day dining destination. It is beautiful both in its decor and the food it produces – the breakfast in particular is one of the best we’ve ever had. You can see our full piece and read our Jansz restaurant review here.

Pulitzer Amsterdam Hotel ReviewThe other restaurant, Pause, overlooks the gardens, with a number of tables also outside on the terrace for if you wish to dine al fresco when the sun shines. The friendly breakfast, morning coffees, light dishes, a great glass of wine can all be taken in or out and it’s a great spot to recharge and relax.

Pause Pulitzer AmsterdamNo vacation would be complete without a great cocktail and when in Amsterdam, you are in the perfect place for this. The Pulitzer Bar is a timeless classic with plump leather armchairs and moody lighting ideal for an atmospheric tipple or two. It exudes glamour, hints at romance and offers somewhere to get dressed up and relax.
