Sagrada Familia Sagrada Familia is Antoni Guadi’s great unfinished work. It was started 140 years ago, and the enigmatic architect set out to make his vision of a minor basilica spectacular. It would feature spires that stretched into the sky. The project ran out of money, and despite using his own money, the project remained unfinished. Now, designated as a minor basilica by the pope, work resumes on this fantastic building once more using Gaudi’s original drawings. Las Ramblas This famous Las Ramblas street in Barcelona is something every visitor to the city has to do. As you walk between Plaça de Catalunya down to the Columbus Monument at the waterfront, you will be greeted by a colourful array of street entertainers, living statues, bird-sellers, and flower stands. The smell of baked waffles will entice you to keep walking until you reach the waterfront. From here, you can swing by Barcelona’s Aquarium or the Maremagnum mall. Why not do both? A Day at the Beach Barcelona is blessed with some magnificent beaches, the most famous of which is Sant Sebastia. This is geared for visitors with trendy bars and shops flanking the beach. This is ideal for refreshment and to take a break from sunbathing. If you move further along the coast, you will find quieter beaches often frequented by locals. Like the rest of the city, Barcelona’s beaches have something for everyone. La Boqueria La Boqueria is a two-hundred-year-old food market and is considered the main one in the city. There have been other Boquerias since medieval times, but this is the first one to stand on this site. The market is covered by a beautiful wrought iron-framed, glass canopy and is a great place to take in a cool drink and people watch. Locals flock here to buy fruits, vegetables, cheese, cold meats and fish. Park Güell Another Gaudi epic creation is Park Güell. Originally, the great architect was commissioned to build a gated community for the wealthy. Gaudi built miles of brightly coloured paving, serpentine mosaic benches, fountains, sculptures, all quite amazing. In the centre is a museum giving the history of the park. Although the design was stunning, it never really caught on with the wealthy. As such, it was bought by the city and turned into a park for all to enjoy. Barcelona is an amazing city and one you will want to return to again and again. It is a good idea to book in advance, so you’re not left disappointed for many of the cities attractions.
