Why we should all fly down to FLY LDN – a new exercise and mindful class that guarantees results for both the body and brain…
Lockdown taught us many things. One of them was that, as we had always suspected, quality is better than quantity. We were forced to cut down on journeys, clothes and even friend lists to the bare minimum. It was an unprecedented set of circumstances that asked us to make difficult choices. In the process, we would figure out what was really important. Big weddings, big gatherings and anything that was over the top became garish and less desirable. It was in this spirit that I attended my first class at FLY LDN on Creechurch Lane, EC3.
Fly LDN is a short walk from either Bank or Liverpool Street stations and a stone’s throw from both The Gherkin and Leadenhall Market. If you’re inclined to cycling, there are plenty of spaces for parking your bike right outside the studio.
Much like the inside, the outside is understated. No blinding lights or fancy signs screaming at you from the street; I almost walked past it the first time. Once inside, it is a space that is calming and soothing which defines the new dawn of what it means to be healthy. You realise that this is what you hope the future of exercise look like; a balance of wellbeing and fulfilment which has little to do with chasing the unrelenting desire for physical perfection.
The space inside is a delicate grey, white and black, masterfully entwined to make a small space look and feel far more inviting than it ought to be. Instructors glide past dressed in black, the staff are welcoming and it is all so utterly pleasing. There are lockers, drinking water, clean towels, impossibly clean showers and even deodorant, dry shampoo and hair straighteners. These little personal touches go a long way in a crowded fitness market.
The timetable of in-studio classes has been mindfully curated. Dynamic pilates, barre, slow flow, chill 60, low impact balanced with more intense workouts such as ass & abs and booty camp. Even with the busiest of schedules, you’re unlikely to miss the same class twice in one week. Whilst barre and dynamic pilates instructors consistently delivered a remarkable workout my favourite was deep house stretch – a session dedicated to nothing more than showing gratitude to your body. Set to soothing house music against a digital backdrop of flickering candles, conducted in dim light. During my time at FLY LDN the class was always scheduled last on a Friday evening. I would look forward to it and became the highlight of my week. I couldn’t think of a better way to conclude a working week.
And with all this mindful and slow exercise, what of the results? Well, they were swift. After only three weeks of attending between three and five classes per week, the waistline I’d kissed goodbye during lockdown had returned. I found myself buttoning up trousers with greater ease and clinching my waist with belts. My upper body and arms looked and felt light and graceful yet strong. My legs no longer struggled to get into jeans. Not only were the results visible but I’d got there mindfully without setting foot on a treadmill.
The final verdict? Go see for yourself. FLY LDN is fabulous.
