A TWO WEEK EXHIBITION EXPLOSIVE IN COLOUR AND RICH IN NARRATIVE AS THE ARTIST EXPLORES THE WONDERS OF CUBA, HIS SUBTROPICAL GARDENS, EXOTIC SCENES FROM FILM AND MORE…
An Exhibition Of Paintings by Nick Williams
In 1999 Nick Williams spent a month in Cuba, so captivated by the exquisite architecture and sublime interiors, this visit was to influence his art for the next two decades. The artist says he constantly finds himself “returning to these images which are so evocative” and this is a significant theme in his new exhibition.
In other areas of the exhibition, we see the same eye for colourful scenes, whether its travel inspired scenes or the lush subtropical garden he created.
“Our subtropical garden was started ten years ago and features a swimming pond and sunken garden. The mild climate and our coastal situation enables plants to flourish. Most extraordinary are the vast battalions of echium pininana which can grow up to twenty feet tall. They produce astonishing purple flowers in the summer, and the bees worship them. They originate from the Canary Islands. We were invited to join the National Garden Scheme last year and will be opening the garden to the general public on 24th June and 22nd July to raise money for charities, notably Marie Curie.” Nick Williams
The garden features throughout the exhibition as a place of escape and wonder for the artist.
Nick also has the ability to take you inside an intriguing space to apply your imagination to the scene – to interpret the relations between the people, the conversation being had, the scenario, bringing it further to life.
Perhaps his most intriguing work is what came from the artist becoming the primary carer for a pair of snakes; every couple of months when they shed their skin, he would use the sheddings in his paintings.
