Eudon Choi AW16 Show Review

Abstract art is the main form of inspiration for Eudon Choi’s breathtaking Autumn Winter 2016 collection.

Initially drawn to the way abstract art makes no attempt to depict an accurate representation of a visual reality but uses shapes, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect, Choi saw parallel with this and how he approaches design.

Two artists in particular provided inspiration for the collection- Saloua Raouda Choucair and Helen Frankenthaler. Both are abstract artists but with widely differing styles- Saloua favours sharp, graphic lines and strong colours and Helen fluid shapes and muted, relaxed brushwork.
It was this juxtaposition of the muted and the vibrant, the hard and the soft that formed the core reference point for Eudon Choi AW16 collection.

The sharpness was expressed through crisp tailoring and single, swift detailing such as block colour panels, asymmetry and single contrasting lapels. Pleating was seen in almost skeletal structures, each fold adjusted with meticulous precision. Softness was viewed in long crepe dresses with gently coloured rectangles and particularly in a camel parka with a beautiful buttermilk-hue lining.

The polo neck make more than one appearance so it’s good to see this synonymous and flattering style is going nowhere. Bell sleeves and long draped shoulders, v-necklines and dipped hems are all other aspects we can look forward to in the Autumn. Open shoulders were very much a recurring element and knotted twists and precise pleats added an element of quirkiness, nodding towards the abstract.
