Hotel Felix Review – A beautiful hideaway in Cambridge

Hotel Felix -a relaxing and contemporary oasis in the hubbub of the historic city.

Nestled in a little street in Cambridge, just a short walk from the city centre is Hotel Felix. Following its conception as a Victiorian Villa in 1852, it was only in 2002 this historic building was renovated to become Cambridge’s first four star boutique Hotel.

This renovation saw many of its original period features being restored, whilst also being married with splashes of colour and contemporary design. Quirky, comforting and relaxing, it really is a home away from home.

The room

We stayed in one of the junior suites, situated on the ground floor of the Hotel. Bright, airy and filled with character, this was a suite unlike any other. With a generous offering of books to read, high beamed ceilings and a television in the bathroom, every aspect was thought of. The king-size bed was very comfortable with duck down duvets and Egyptian cotton bed linen.
If there ever was pretense for running and jumping on the bed movie-style, this Hotel offers it.
The room perfectly encapsulates an air of opulent simplicity, exuding charm and luxury yet steering well clear of any pretentiousness.
A definite 10/10 sleep for anyone.

Dinner

Dinner is held in the main Graffiti restaurant; this room further reflects the art deco theme which is implemented throughout the Hotel. The area is fresh, contemporary and undeniably cosy, creating a stylish area to enjoy your food whilst also feeling right at home.
Large  windows overlook the south facing terrace and gardens, offering a beautiful view  whilst you are enjoying a breakfast, afternoon tea or dinner.
Whilst the weather was relatively warm during our stay, there is an open fire in the middle of the restaurant which can bring a lick of heat and comfort to the space in gloomier days. The restaurant is renowned for its delicious modern British cooking with a Mediterranean twist attracting those far and wide, meaning reservations are advisable.

For starters I opted for ‘Parma Ham, Mediterranean vegetables and rocket salad. Full of flavours and presented beautifully, this was a perfect dish to start. Filling enough to whet my palette for the main course without causing me to bloat, this was a delicious choice. My partner chose calamari (his favourite- thus meaning he had plenty of other calamari dishes to compare to) and announced it as one of the best calamari starters he had ever tried. Again the portion was of a generous size, hot and fresh from the kitchen.

For main I had an absolutely delicious corn-fed chicken with fondant potato and chicken jus. The chicken was succulent and tender, the potato crispy on the outside and deliciously fluffy on the inside and the chicken jus bursting with flavour. My partner opted for another favourite of his- Pork belly. The Slow Cooked Belly of Pork was accompanied by shallot Purée, fondant potato, and Pommery mustard Jus. Again, it was presented well, looked delicious and tasted even better. The meat was cooked perfectly and the extra side of chips he ordered were delicious (even if we couldn’t quite finish them!)

I’m warning you now, if you are not a dessert person, visiting the Graffiti restaurant means that may well change.

I opted for the chocolate brownie- if I had ever before used the phrase ‘death by chocolate’ I take it back at this point, for Graffiti showed me what it really felt like. And it was heaven.
Rich, sweet and with deliciously creamy undertones, this is a pudding to save room for.

Location

Location is a strong point for Hotel Felix. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and in the peaceful hubbub of the building, it’s easy to forget the bustling city of Cambridge is just a short journey away. We drove to the centre (it look about ten minutes and was very easy to find) but if you fancy a walk it will take about 25 minutes to half an hour- the Hotel were great in advising us the best routes and even printed us a map. The historic city is well worth a visit- why not look round one of the University campuses or take a boat river along the river Cam?

Contemporary, clean and somewhere that goes the extra mile, this Hotel is ideal for a City break away steeped in history.
