A Sydney to Melbourne campervan road trip is one of Australia’s most unforgettable journeys, where the drive itself is just as memorable as the destinations along the way. From sweeping coastal roads and turquoise bays to charming seaside towns, national parks, and incredible local food, this route offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.
Travelling by campervan gives you the freedom to slow down, take scenic detours, and wake up surrounded by nature – whether that’s near pristine beaches, peaceful lakes, or lush bushland. It’s the ideal way to explore the coastline at your own pace, without the pressure of strict schedules or hotel check-ins.
To help you make the most of the journey, we’ve created a carefully planned 9-day itinerary covering 1,475km, packed with must-see stops, hidden gems, and unique experiences that will turn your Sydney to Melbourne road trip into a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
1. Sydney to Jervis Bay
Your road trip begins in Sydney, where you will drive along the New South Wales coast, with opportunities to stop along the way to enjoy the Sea Cliff Bridge, Symbio Wildlife Park, and Kiami. A stop at Berry will extend your trip too, where you can enjoy a quaint town with cafes and unique stores you can’t find anywhere else.
Jervis Bay has plenty of sandy beaches for you to explore, with Hare Bay, Callala Beach, Myrrays Beach, and Hyams Beach being among our favourites.
2. Jervis Bay to Central Tilba
Before you leave Jervis Bay, we recommend a cruise to spot dolphins, seals, and whales, allowing you to enjoy the open water before a longer drive. To break up your drive, stop at Milton to enjoy cafes and a stylish town with beautiful architecture. We also recommend stopping at Batemans Bay, where you can enjoy fresh oysters and a kayak tour featuring oyster tastings, with views of the Clyde River.
Central Tilba offers a unique experience in a heritage-listed village, where you can learn more about its history and enjoy an overnight stay before continuing your journey.
3. Tilba to Merimbula
Driving to Merimbula is the perfect opportunity to extend your trip and make the most out of your driving time. There is plenty of scenery to enjoy on the one-hour drive, with national parks that you can stop at and stretch your legs. We recommend stopping at Wallaga Lake to see the Horse Head Rock and Camel Rock.
Your time in Merimbula can be spent relaxing and enjoying the seaside town and its boardwalk, where you can walk along the coast and soak up the views. Take some time to visit the lake for swimming, relaxing and enjoying your surroundings.
4. Mermubula to Mallacoota
Mallacoota is only a short drive away, with plenty of places along the way where you can stop to enjoy the view. Oyster tours, former whaling towns, and bars line the road, giving you plenty of opportunities to extend your trip. There are plenty of local parks in Mallacoota, too, where you can enjoy a slower pace and recharge before the rest of your journey.
5. Mallacoota to Lakes Entrance
As you drive to Lakes Entrance, we recommend stopping at Gabo Island, where you can see colonies of seabirds and seals. Take a chartered tour, where you can spot dolphins and visit a 19th-century lighthouse. At Lakes Entrance, check out the Buchan Caves or the Ninety Mile Beach. Along the coast, there are plenty of local favourites where you can stop for a bite to eat.
6. Lakes Entrance to Walhalla
Walhalla takes you inland, where you can enjoy Victoria’s history. We recommend Mertung Hot Spring, where you can recharge and enjoy some tranquillity. Gippsland is also worth a visit, along with Sale and the botanical gardens. There are plenty of historical sites to enjoy, including Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine, Windsor House, and the Goldfields Railway.
7. Walhalla to Wilsons Promontory
The drive to Wilson’s Promontory offers charming towns, national parks, and rainforests, allowing you to stop and extend your journey. Arriving at Wilsons Promontory National Park, you can take advantage of its walking trails and beaches, filled with plenty of photo opportunities. Mt Oberon is the perfect place for a climb, where 360-degree views of Wilsons Promontory await. There is plenty of wildlife to spot too, including wallabies and kangaroos.
8. Wilson’s Promontory to Philip Island
Philip Island is the perfect penultimate stop, where you can enjoy local wineries, breweries, and regional markets and cafes for a tasty lunch.
