Let’s face it—summer is well and truly behind us! Now’s the time to focus on making your home somewhere you can get snug and cosy as the temperatures outside drop.
It’s often easier said than done, though. It can be tough to harness an inviting feeling if you have an open-plan living space, a minimalist interior, high ceilings, or lots of windows.
Fortunately, a few simple tricks can help you crank up the cosiness.
Layering Textures and Textiles
Tactile elements are great for softening the edges of your space. Explore a variety of textures by incorporating chunky knit throws, a large jute rug, and velvet cushions—these all add depth to the space and make it feel warmer. It can also help you create a more visually engaging space.
You should consider adding furniture that is made to fit in awkward spaces to bring these alternative materials into your room while filling a space that otherwise is hard to use.
Don’t forget your window dressings, either. Opt for heavy fabrics that insulate and block out any external light. You’ll quickly feel like you’re in your own little world.
The Art of Lighting
Regardless of the time of year, putting on ‘the big light’ is a surefire way to eliminate any sense of cosiness. Instead, rely on different sources of illumination. You could combine a floor lamp in one corner, a desk lamp on the other side of the room, and some LED backlights for your TV to create the perfect setting. Dimmer switches are ideal too, as they allow you to set the lighting to however you feel.
Candles and fairy lights add a magical touch when you’re less concerned about functional lighting, too.
Creating Cosy Corners
Being cosy is all about feeling warm and secure, so why not breathe new life into an unused corner by turning it into somewhere special?
If you’re an avid reader, it doesn’t take much to create a wonderful reading nook. Just find something comfy to sit on (it could even be a beanbag!) Gather some soft, thick blankets and pop a lamp with a warm-coloured bulb nearby, and you’re ready to go.
A window seat is ideal if your space has the right layout. Watching the visibly cold world go by will only add to your contentment about being indoors.
Bringing Nature Indoors
Wherever possible, you should look to incorporate natural materials. Wool rugs provide some natural insulation and a pleasant feel underfoot. A stone accent wall or fireplace brings the outside in and makes you feel ready to hunker down. However, don’t overdo it, or the space will feel cold and drab. Wood is also great for providing a connection to nature, so choose furniture with a finish that shows the grain in all its glory.
You can also draw inspiration from the outside world in your colour palette. Earthy greens and browns can help you feel grounded and snug. You can complement it with autumnal scents like pumpkin spice, cedarwood, and ginger to take it to the next level.
