Review: The Three Horseshoes Inn Groesffordd – Fine dining in a beautiful setting

The Three Horseshoes Inn Groesffordd offers fine dining in a cosy setting that will surpass all expectations…

If you are planning a venture to the Brecon Beacons (and if you’re not, we suggest you do) and were to walk down a twist of country lanes in Groesffordd, you would soon stumble upon a beautiful pub and restaurant called the Three Horseshoes Inn Groesffordd. This well-styled gastropub is working to make a destination of this quaint and sleepy village and has visitors trekking from all over for a slice of the action.

Push open the glass-panelled door and you step into the pub side of the building where you are greeted with the soft crackling of a log-burner and plenty of places to draw up a chair and nurse a pint or crack open a bottle of prosecco at the end of a long week. The floors are a slate grey, the walls a mix of neutrals and exposed brickwork, and squashy cushions perch on fat armchairs beneath a cosy window spot. The air is peppered with the scent of lilies from the fresh bunch on the windowsill and a hint of hops to remind you this is a traditional pub at heart. Wander past the impressively stocked bar (and be sure to look out for their resident cockerpoodle Ted) and you enter the restaurant area. This is a sleek yet cosy and well-decorated space that is flooded with light during the day and imbued with a real homey feel once the sun sets. The walls are creme and grey and the furniture similar in colour. Checkered chairs are tucked under wooden tables and exposed beams adorn the ceiling.

While some places can be all style and no substance, The Three Horseshoes Inn Groesffordd proves you can be both. Their menu ticks all the boxes for when you’re going out to eat somewhere like this. Their claims to reinvent pub food are certainly true, with starters such as Wye Valley asparagus with crispy egg, shallot puree and truffle foam or Crispy lamb sweetbreads, with jalapeno mayo, pickled shallot, and coriander. Mains wise you can enjoy the likes of slow-cooked short rib of Welsh beef with wild garlic, asparagus, mushrooms and beef fat sourdough crumb or Pan Fried fillets of Cornish John Dory with roasted broccoli, pickled mussels, pomme puree and mussel sauce. And don’t forget to leave room for dessert where you can indulge in heavenly dishes such as a dark chocolate mousse with praline and confit blood orange, or a rhubarb cheesecake with gingernuts and honey.

Three Horseshoes Inn GroesfforddThree Horseshoes Inn GroesfforddThere is a dedicated Sunday lunch menu and also a kids menu too. The food is all prepared fresh in the kitchen by their dedicated team of chefs and many of the ingredients are foraged locally by the team and Adele Nozedar – a highly esteemed author, food writer and passionate forager. The food manages to strike the perfect balance between offering something that is gut-bustingly comforting, yet also not something you could make yourself at home. Even their pub classics such as their own Three Horseshoes Pie or beer battered fillet of Cornish Haddock pack a flavoursome punch and leave you slipping into a happy food-coma. Every dish is presented beautifully and with the deft care and precision you’d expect in a five-star establishment. The flavours are creative and perfectly balanced and you can taste the freshness of all the ingredients in each bite.
There are a wide range of wines to accompany your meal and your waiter will be more than happy to recommend something to match your food choice.

Three Horseshoes Inn GroesfforddWhen the sun shines there is a beer garden out the back where you can look over the beautiful countryside views. There are also beach huts which seat eight, with a table, heater and lighting to be booked out for al fresco dining.

The Three Horseshoes Inn Groesffordd ticks all the boxes and adds an extra few in there too. It encapsulates the best bits of a classic pub and a fine dining establishment and marries them to craft the perfect location any day of the week. Whether you’re looking for something as an anniversary dinner with your other half, a family meal, or a Sunday roast after a walk through the countryside, The Three Horseshoes Inn Greosffordd will not disappoint.
