First Look: Backyard Cinema Settles Into New South London Home

Having bid goodbye to their short-lived Borough spot, Backyard Cinema has a brand spanking new location in Wandsworth and is kicking off with their Winter Night Garden spectacular…

As those of you who have attended a Backyard Cinema experience will know, the company is anything but traditional when it comes to their immersive screenings of the nation’s most-loved films. Their showing of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet featured a roaring live choir, while this summer they brought Venice Beach to London, transforming their former Borough location into a sandy oasis for their LA Nights series. Having showcased their talents in various spots over the years, the Backyard Cinema team has now settled down in Wandsworth, South London.

The new venue, located a ten-minute walk from Wandsworth Town Overground Station, is likely to prove a hit among visitors. While attending the press preview night, we were relieved to find the entrance to the main event was as magical as ever. Guests were asked to step into a wardrobe filled with fur coats, before walking through a tiny passageway decorated with vines and depictions of woodland creatures. But Narnia wasn’t waiting on the other side of the door, we were instead greeted by a large screening room, filled with comfortable couches.Backyard Cinema Wandsworth Winter Night Garden

Upon leaving the cinema, we were transported to a large bar space, complete with communal tables and benches – reminiscent of our school days. Beyond the indoor social area lay an outdoor arena, with food trucks to satisfy both sweet and salty cravings. Those who like to indulge at the cinema will be pleased to know the new venue offers an extensive beer and wine list, while also catering to cocktail-lovers with specials such as the Aperol Spritz.

Backyard Cinema’s newest visual experience, the Winter Night Garden, will see the South London venue screening a variety of box office hits. Visitors can book tickets for classics such as the 90s coming-of-age drama Clueless or revisit Patrick Swayze’s starring turn in Dirty Dancing. Those looking for something a little more modern may want to check out the 2019 films such as Disney’s live action remake of Aladdin or the out-of-this-world Elton John biopic Rocketman.
