Top makeup tips for enhancing your lips

Whilst it’s great finding a lipstick you love, what’s even better is finding out how to make it last. Here’s our top tips…

We spoke to make up artist Tori Harris and she said the secret to keeping lipstick on for a good amount of time lies in how you prepare the lips…

lips makeup tips
For chapped lips…

My go to product is Elizabeth Arden’s 8hr cream Skin Protect – a thick, orange, gel like product which can be used on any area of dry skin but I find it particularly great on lips. Rub the lips gently with a toothbrush to remove any dead and flaky skin or use a lip scrub – some great smelling ones are available at Lush. Use 8hr cream like a normal lip balm applying as often as possible.

To make lipstick last longer…

Use a lip primer such as MAC’s Prep and Prime lip primer underneath the lipstick and lip liner. By applying the primer first, it makes the lips much smoother by creating a canvas for the lipstick to cling to. It also makes applying the lip liner easier as it will glide onto the lips.
Use a neutral toned lip liner to line the lips and also fill in the whole lip with colour – this means as the lipstick wears off you wont be left with a line around your lips but also means you will still have some colour on your lips it also helps to make the lipstick last longer. For more umph to your lip colour match the lip liner to the colour or to neutralize a bright lipstick use a slightly darker liner.

To avoid touching up…

Try using a lip stain such as Benefits cheek and lip tint in ‘Benetint’ which gives natural colour and very long lasting – for a little shine you can use lip gloss over the top!
Gloss on its on is a very low maintenance look – if you don’t want to have to think about topping up and don’t mind periods of not having anything on your lips it’s the best option. If you prefer gloss but want a it to last a bit longer use a lip liner underneath.

Other tips…

If you’re wearing a bold colour and are prone to getting lipstick on your teeth you can avoid this faux pas – pop your index finger on your tongue, close your lips around it and slowly pull your finger out – this should remove any excess, just be careful who’s around when you do it!

Blotting and layering lipstick helps to create a longer lasting finish. Apply one coat and blot a couple of times on a tissue before applying another coat.
