It can be easy to neglect your outerwear and focus more on your outfit underneath. But this shouldn’t be the case. Here a style guide to men’s casual jackets…

Your outerwear collection should be just as important as what’s underneath it. With a huge choice of different jackets and coats for men, it’s easy to build up a different collection for every occasion. For the most part, you simply can’t beat a casual jacket; still smart, but with a more relaxed silhouette that can lend itself to any number of social occasions. With that in mind, here we take a look at some of the most popular men’s casual jackets.

Sherpa collared jacket

For a year-round design that can provide warmth as well as style, Sherpa fabric is the ultimate go-to. Sherpa fabric is incredibly soft and is often used in the lining of jackets to deliver additional protection from the elements. Sherpa fabric is also popular for the collars and cuffs of jackets too, making it a more visible element. This works perfectly with short jackets, usually in a dark colour with a contrasting light Sherpa collar. Trucker jackets in particular work well with Sherpa collars and lining, providing the perfect transitional style in a casual design.

Puffer jacket

Puffer jackets were first invented in the 1930s as a way of providing protection from the cold. In more recent times, the style has been closely linked with streetwear trends. With that in mind, the puffer jacket is one of the most casual yet stylish designs amongst men’s outerwear trends. The puffer jacket is typically created in a shorter length, sitting around the hips. It has a padded or quilted design; a statement style that hasn’t changed much since its invention. Opt for a bolder colour to make a statement, such as orange or red, or stick to the classic shades of black or navy.

Bomber jacket

The bomber jacket originates from military clothing, which is very fitting as military-inspired clothing is also a huge trend at the moment. You might sometimes hear bomber jackets being referred to as aviator or pilot jackets, as they are inspired by the jackets worn by various air forces across the world. Bomber jackets are generally quite lightweight and can be easily dressed up or down. They have a structured collar and waist length, but a relaxed silhouette. It can be an incredibly practical choice; wear on its own or layer with other styles including shirts, polo shirts and hoodies.

Harrington jacket

The Harrington jacket is another popular casual jacket for men and has a traditionally sporty style, which is perfect for everyday wear. With a similar silhouette to a bomber jacket, it is usually created in cotton or polyester for a comfortable fit. The unique feature of a Harrington jacket is usually found in the lining. Many designs are found with a tartan or check patterned lining on the inner of the jacket, which can create some extra style and colour!
