What does your perfect city break look like? Do you like a short break or a long break? With the way we travel changing, the length of holidays are changing too…
Traditionally, when people go on holiday, they go away for two weeks. They get on a plane, go somewhere hot and hope that the company hasn’t completely spun out of control in the time that they’ve been off work. But these days, fewer and fewer people are going on holiday in this way, favouring a city break instead.
According to a report by the Office for National Statistics, more Brits are opting to go on shorter holidays instead. Over the last 20 years, said the ONS, there has been a marked decline in the number of people taking two-week holidays. And, instead of spending all out on one big holiday a year, many may opt to go on city breaks.
The perfect city break is both a relaxing and entertaining experience and here you can read all about just why that is…
You experience the rich culture
According to TravelRepublic, some of the best city break locations include London, Paris and Edinburgh. What all of these cities have in common is that they all have incredibly strong cultural identities. In London, the culture looks like its musical history, with grime, rock and dance music all making up the city’s rich cultural tapestry. In Paris, it looks like art galleries, with some of the world’s most famous works on display at the Louvre (such as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa). And in Edinburgh, it looks like modern and medieval architecture coming together to make a beautiful collage of a city. On your city break, take the time to take this culture in.
You taste all the cuisine on offer
Different cities have different taste identities. Influenced by immigrants who’ve moved into the area, trade deals and varied takes on popular dishes, you can experience a city through your taste buds. It can be difficult to know where to start, so plan your day according to the big three meals of the day (adding snack spots if your stomach has room!). A day’s menu could begin with a traditional, local breakfast delivery in the morning – an omelette seasoned to perfection and topped with fresh vegetables and mouth-watering morsels of meat or a hot and flaky croissant. Then, you could tuck into a luxurious lunch where you devour something that fully incorporates local spices and gives you a break between sightseeing. Complete your day by spoiling yourself with a dreamy dinner in a classic restaurant.
You take in all the sights
If you want to grace your Instagram feed with something other than pictures of your food, be sure to take in all the sights too. Cities are packed full of things to see and do, from monuments to incredible, historic buildings and seaside views of the waves lapping at your feet, with the sun just setting on the horizon. The sights of a city are often what makes it so popular to tourists, so be sure to take full advantage, snapping shots (filters optional) to capture special moments.
It’s understandable why so many would go on a city break. These short trips can be more affordable and you have to set aside less time to travel. So, where will you go next?
