It can be tough keeping the children chilled while also being entertained. This is why we have put together some relaxing activities to try with the kids this weekend…

Being a parent is tough, but being a child in today’s world comes with its own set of challenges. We’re all facing high levels of pressure, stress and anxiety and it’s not always easy to catch a break to calm down. 2020, in particular, has been filled with uncertainty and difficult changes both at home and at school. While we are not able to explore our local areas as easily, there are still many things you can do.

The signs your child is overstressed range from clinginess to anger, aggressive or stubborn behaviours and of course crying and distress. It’s much more difficult for children to gain control over their emotions so it’s down to us as parents to help them relax and unwind.

Here we’ll explore some relaxing activities you can try with your kids this weekend.

Break out those colouring pages

Colouring isn’t just a simple way to pass the time. It is in fact, incredibly soothing. The levels of concentration required whilst colouring are similar to those required when meditating, which means your child can relax and keep themselves occupied without leaving the kitchen table. Adult colouring books have soared in popularity recently, so if you’re feeling a little stressed, why not give it a go yourself?

Threading beads

What about making jewellery for your slightly older kids? Another timeless activity that requires high levels of focus and quiet, threading beads is not only great for developing hand-eye coordination in infants, but it’s also great for relaxation. You can use some thick cord and wooden beads or even a straw or pipe-cleaners. Just remember to always supervise young children with threads and beads.

Reading time

If your child is stressed and needs time to relax, then grab a story, sit somewhere quiet and read together. Take your time through the pages, stop to look at the pictures and maybe try to guess what is happening next. Sit your little one on your lap so they can feel your breathing, it’s both calming and incredibly soothing.

Create a hydration station

When was the last time your child had a nice drink? Dehydration can quickly take hold and if your child is feeling hot and thirsty, then it could be the reason behind their sudden meltdown or high-stress levels. Grab a jug and fill it with cool, refreshing water, if they’re old enough let them pour their own or help them to manage the task. Slice some fruit so they can add it to the jug for added flavour. Get them to take little sips and they’ll soon cool off again.

And finally, blow some bubbles!

Relaxation is all about controlling your breathing, which means that blowing bubbles is the perfect activity to keep your children occupied and relaxed. It’s also incredibly fun, so even if their calm and relaxing breathing activities descend into raucous laughter as they try to pop as many bubbles as they can, at least they’re distracted and having fun!
