Whether you are installing a new kitchen, or just want to make a small change, choosing the best colours for your kitchen is an important task. It can be quite challenging when there are so many trends and a variety of different factors to consider. This can be because picking the colour theme is not just a matter of simply choosing a colour that you like, but it also means considering the entire theme of the kitchen, the size of the kitchen, how much natural light you have, whether you have existing furniture and accessories to consider, and much more.

It can at this point seem a little overwhelming, but with the right knowledge, you will be able to move forward with ease and create the kitchen of your dreams. Here are some top tips to help you get started.

#1 Research colours

The best place to start is to research different colour palettes and see what you like. This is a great thing to do, even if you have a colour in your mind already, as firstly, you can see what the colour looks like in different environments, and secondly, you might surprise yourself in your searches and find a colour that you may not have chosen that fits perfectly in your kitchen. Utilize websites such as Houzz, Instagram and Pinterest, which are great for inspiration and you can create your mood board from. If you have time, it is also an excellent idea to head out and find showrooms in your local area to explore and see the colours in person, as they may look different.

#2 Statements

While considering the colour palette you wish to use, it is also important to consider how you can incorporate different aspects of your kitchen to create points of interest or even a statement. This can be done in several ways, for example, utilising architecture and structures in your kitchen, through the use of bold or contrasting colours, or fixtures and fittings.

#3 Size and light

The size of your kitchen is a crucial element to consider when choosing the right colours for your kitchen, because, with the wrong colour palette, you risk changing the entire atmosphere, for example, and making it appear darker, smaller and more cluttered. When designing your kitchen, you must weigh up the colours with the size of the room. It is recommended that if you have a small kitchen, you should opt for a lighter colour scheme, as that will help lighten the room and make it appear more spacious. Small kitchens should avoid a darker colour palette, such as greys, browns, and black as it will feel more boxed in and are not suitable. The same concepts go for the light in the room. If your kitchen does not have a lot of natural light, or you use lower lighting in your kitchen, lighter coloured walls are more suitable.

#4 Flooring, cabinets and worktops

If you are renovating your kitchen, it might be a good idea to choose your flooring, cabinets and worktops first, as this will have a large impact on how your kitchen looks. You will need to decide whether you would like your flooring, cabinets and worktops to blend well with your colour palette, or whether you would prefer it was used as a statement piece. You can do this by finding kitchen components and flooring that are unique, have a lot of texture or pretty patterns, or just a bold colour.

If you are leaving your existing flooring down and cabinets and worktops in place, then you can choose a colour palette that compliments it.

#5 Accessories

The kind of accessories you have in your kitchen, including your plates, pots and pans, utensils, wall hangings, ornaments, etc. will entirely depend on your theme and the kind of aesthetic you are aiming for. You may decide to pick one colour theme so everything is matching or you may devise to mix and match several colours that complement each other and incorporate any new items that you have found, such as coloured Verano Ceramics

#6 Type of paint

As well as the lighting and size of the kitchen, another important factor to consider is the type of paint that you are going to use. This is because, with different paint and brands, the colour shades, pigments and finishes can vary. Some may provide you with a bright, clean, glossy look, whereas others may provide you with a more retro, chalkier look. There is no right or wrong, it will all depend on your style and how you wish to design your kitchen.
