It has long been thought that top music acts can be susceptible to losing their grip on reality when they become globally famous.
History is littered with examples of major stars forgetting their roots, treating fans with disdain and behaving as if they were above the law.
However, there are plenty of music acts who use their status and wealth to make a massive difference to other people around the world.
They include artists from across the music spectrum including metal bands, indie groups and pop stars. With that in mind, we take a look at five music acts that possess a social conscience.
Metallica
According to recent research by Betway, American rock icons Metallica are one of the most expensive artists to watch when they perform live.
However, they are also renowned for going above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to interacting with their loyal fanbase.
From hosting interactive meet and greets to working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to make dreams come true, Metallica understands the importance of giving back to its fans.
Imagine Dragons
Superfan Tyler Robinson was living with stage 4 cancer when he sneaked out of the hospital with a friend to attend an Imagine Dragons concert.
He famously got the chance to sing ‘It’s Time’ with the group and subsequently forged a friendship that endured during the rest of his life.
After his death in 2013, the band launched the Tyler Robinson Foundation which has raised millions of dollars to support families who have children with cancer.
Rihanna
Rihanna has demonstrated her commitment to supporting a diverse range of global causes throughout her career, setting a perfect example to her legion of fans.
She founded the Believe Foundation when she was aged 18 – an organisation that helps terminally ill children by providing a wide range of emotional and practical support.
Rihanna has also served as an ambassador for UNICEF’s Tap Project, which raises vital funds to provide clean water and sanitation to underprivileged people around the world.
Florence and The Machine
Florence Welch surprised a terminally ill fan in 2016 by turning up at her hospice room in Austin, Texas, and delivering a special one-off live performance.
Karinya Chen, 15, was not well enough to attend Welch’s show the previous night, prompting staff at the facility to reach out to the kind-hearted singer.
The English vocalist and the girl sang together – creating memories that the youngster held dear until she sadly passed away later the same year.
Maroon 5
American pop rock stars Maroon 5 are another band that uses their global profile to make valuable contributions to global causes.
They launched #Maroon5Day in 2016 – an annual event designed to encourage their fans to donate money to UNICEF’s sterling work around the world.
Members of the band also dipped their hands in their own pockets to match donations, demonstrating their commitment to helping people less fortunate than themselves.
