Which Indoor Plants Are Healthy for You?

If you’re choosing indoor plants for your home, what are the criteria for picking out plants? Are you concerned about which ones are tidy or don’t require much cleaning up after? Maybe you’re concerned about finding plants that create a certain kind of atmosphere within your home. Have you considered, though, the kinds of plants that might be healthiest to have in your home?

Here are some plants that are good for your health that also make good indoor plants.

Indoor Plants Are Healthy

Improve Oxygen in the Home

Some plants are exceptional at making the air purer. If you live somewhere that has poor air quality, you may be concerned about how safe the air is to breathe even inside your own home. With the right indoor plants, you can give your air quality a boost and create a beautiful garden indoors.

Some of the better indoor plants you can find for improving oxygen are peace lilies, rubber plants, snake plants, ferns, and English Ivy. What these plants do is filter out irritants and pollutants in the air. They also absorb harmful carbon dioxide and emit oxygen. That means better, cleaner air inside your home. There are added benefits, though, like less risk of asthma attack, improved oxygenation, lower stress levels, and potentially fewer headaches. Having oxygen-producing plants in the home can even help you sleep better at night.

Some of these are really easy to take care of as well, with sparse water needs and little to no mess to clean up.

Easy to Care for

Some plants work really well indoors than others simply because they’re so easy to take care of. Banana trees are low maintenance, and there’s not a lot of clean-up to deal with when you have these either. They are safe for your pets and look great indoors with their giant green leaves.

Snake plants are another good choice because you almost never have to clean up after them. While some plants will have you calling for a maid cleaning service from this company on a regular basis because of how untidy they are, that’s not the case with these low maintenance plants. However, they are harmful to pets.

Cactus plants are excellent indoor plants due to how little care they require. Some of them need to be placed in the sunshine, and they will need a little water from time to time (but not too much), but other than that, there is nothing to worry about. These are probably the lowest maintenance plants you can get, so they should be one of the first options you consider when you are trying to pick out plants for your home.

Flamingo lilies are another beautiful houseplant that take very little care to keep them healthy and thriving. They are not good for cats, but they will look absolutely beautiful in your home, and you won’t have to do very much to keep them in great shape.

You could try growing an areca palm in your home. It tends to be a very small palm and looks a lot like a fern or bamboo due to its numerous small fronds, so it makes for a good alternative to plants that might be messier or less ideal for indoor growth. The areca palm is well suited to indoor gardening because it grows so well in the shade. You don’t have to worry about placing it somewhere it will receive plenty of sunlight.

Healthy for You

Have you considered growing plants that you can use for their health benefits? Aloe vera will spring to mind immediately for some plant-savvy people. It has healing qualities that make it an important part of first aid treatment, according to Medical News Today, and it can be used to treat your pets as well in the event that they get a cut or other superficial injury. One of the best attributes of aloe vera plants is that they will not shed leaves, so there is no mess to clean up with them.

You could try growing some plants that help you relax or not feel as stressed. These would tend to be plants that have soothing scents, like jasmine, lavender, peppermint, chamomile, and many others. The same kinds of plants that would be used in essential oils are often great for your sense of wellbeing. They can create a sense of calm within you.

You may want to try creating a small indoor garden area so that you can grow a number of these smaller, lovely smelling plants. Or you can place them strategically around the home in areas you spend a lot of time in. Your bedroom is a good location because of how the pleasant scent might help you to relax at bedtime. That bathroom can be a good location because of the way these plants make the air smell better. You may also get the most benefit out of a small plant in a tiny, enclosed room like the bathroom where the scent can spread more easily.

If you grow chrysanthemums, you can use them to make a soothing, stress-relieving tea. WebMD says it is good for blood pressure and diabetes and for reducing heart disease risk. The bright colours can help make your home look more cheerful as well. As you choose flowers for your home, keep in mind what will look good there and what may also provide health benefits for you. It is hard to beat the combination.

Make the Right Choice

There are so many good plants to use in your indoor garden that you might feel spoiled for choice. You can try a couple plants out at a time and see how they work for you, and then trade some out for new ones if you aren’t thrilled with them. Keep in mind that some of the houseplants we mentioned are not safe for pets, so beware if you have a housecat or other household pet.

We hope this article helps you feel more informed about the value of choosing certain houseplants for their health benefits.
