The correct footwear

When considering the essentials to pack for a weekend of walking in the Lakes for the first time, many people underestimate some of the walking conditions. As many routes pass through various terrains, it’s wise to pack quality, sturdy and comfortable footwear that will not only support your ankles, but also keep you dry through wet weather conditions. Quality footwear is certainly needed for those wanting to tackle the more adventurous routes, such as Helvellyn and Scafell Pike, which both cross through rubble, mud and snow in the winter.

Don’t forget a local map

The Lake District is a region which spreads across 2,362km[1], meaning there’s a possibility of getting lost whilst walking through unknown routes. Additionally, due to its rural nature, you may struggle to access signal or internet away in the woodlands of green hills, so an easy-to-read local map is a must for all walkers, which can be bought online or even from local post offices when you arrive. There are so many routes to explore, such as Catbells in Keswick, where there is a selection of stunning cottages from Lakelovers for you to rest in after a day of hiking. The Boxtree property in particular is perfect for snuggling up next to the fireplace.

Bring a first aid kit

With such a vast area of outdoor space, there is certainly a possibility of a scrape along the way. Therefore, a travel first aid kit is a must for any route, great or small, in the Lake District. Many first aid kits are small and compact, perfect to fit into your rucksack with essentials, such as plasters, antiseptic wipes, bandages, and a foil blanket in case temperatures drop. Whilst you may not utilise it, it’s better to be safe than sorry when going to lesser-explored terrain.

Waterproof clothing

Due to its positioning and mountainous landscape, the Lake District experiences a lot of rainfall during all seasons. A set of waterproof clothing is an essential addition to your suitcase when visiting, whether this be a waterproof jacket, trousers, gloves, or shoes. Similarly, high wind speeds mean a windbreaker jacket could be useful too.

Suncream

When thinking of essentials to pack for a weekend of walking in the Lakes in the summer, it’s wise to pack suncream due to long durations of sun exposure when walking. Despite being in England, the Lakes do experience sunny summers from time to time and with little to no protection once in the outdoor landscape, it’s easy to burn without realising. Packing a suncream that can be reapplied during the day is a must for any walker’s bag.

Extra clothes

The mountainous landscape of the Lakes means temperatures can vary depending on your whereabouts. When embarking on a long walk, it’s always good to pack additional clothing in case you get too hot, too cold or wet through from the rain. Think extra tops, fleeces, hats and gloves. Walking when you’re uncomfortable can ruin the experience, so additional clothes are an essential.

With these must-have essentials to pack for a weekend of walking in the Lakes ticked off your checklist, you will be able to fully enjoy the experience of a weekend walking in the Lake District, no matter the route or the weather.
