Got an interview but don’t know what to wear? Here are our top tips for picking the perfect outfit for a video interview…
Despite the global pandemic we’re living through right now, many companies are still hiring and there are people all over the world interviewing for and being hired for new jobs. Video and telephone interviews are increasing. If you’re going to be interviewed by video, there are some things to keep in mind that will ensure you look professional and make a good first impression. One of them is the way you dress. Use these tips to help you put together the perfect outfit for a video interview.
Dress Your Bottom Half
It might be tempting to only dress up your top half for a video interview. After all, no one is going to see what you’re wearing on the bottom. But it’s better to dress your entire body for your interview. Why? Because being fully dressed as if you were doing an in-person interview boosts confidence and makes you feel professional and put together. Some interviewers may ask you to stand up, so you want to be ready if that happens. Casual but classic black trousers, like those from Dolce and Gabbana for example, are a great option and are also very versatile.

Use Minimal Jewellery
You want your jewellery to enhance your outfit, but you don’t want it to be distracting during your interview. Wear simple jewellery that goes with your blouse or top, but choose something that isn’t large in size, very shiny or that is a bright colour. Make sure that the items you choose aren’t noisy as well, such as bracelets that clink together when you move your arm.
Use Makeup Correctly
It’s no secret that no one looks their best on a computer screen. The light tends to wash out the complexion and add years to the face. Strategic makeup can help with this so you can put your best face forward. Concealer brightens the under-eye area and foundation evens out your skin tone. Keep it simple and neutral so that your makeup isn’t distracting or too over the top for your interviewer to take you seriously.
Try Your Outfit Before the Interview
Just like you would with an in-person interview, try your outfit on before the big day to make sure it fits and looks professional. Turn on your computer’s camera so you can get an idea of what you might look like to your interviewer. The light in front of the mirror is very different from the light from your computer so making sure you look your best is important before you have your real video interview.
Choose the Right Colours
The colour of your clothing is a big consideration when you’re doing a video interview. In general, darker solid colours look best on camera. However, you can make a statement with a small pop of colour so that you stand out in a good way. Avoid white as it can make you look washed out. You should also make sure that the colours you’re wearing blend with the background behind you so that you don’t clash with your surroundings.
