Gin and Tonic Experience on the London Eye

Spectacular views, classy cocktails and that sweet sensation of being sky high on the London Eye. What better way to enjoy our glorious capital?

On Thursday 9 June Seen in the City was invited to join Schweppes and Gordon’s Gin for the press launch of the brand new G&T experience on the iconic London Eye.Gin & Tonic Experience on the London Eye

I went along with my darling friend, the lovely Lauren, who didn’t need much persuading to join me for this fabulous treat.

Congregating at the priority ticket desk on the South Bank, we were then led to the big Eye in the Sky by two lovely hosts clad in green aprons and armed with mysterious silver metal trunks.

Once we boarded our capsule, the trunks were opened to reveal glasses, shakers, stirrers and an array of colourful garnishes. These ladies had certainly come prepared! A few minutes in and we were all sipping G&Ts and revelling in the sunny scenery either side of the river.

It had been over ten years since either of us had last been on the London Eye, so it was fantastic to see what a difference the recent architectural additions have made to the London Skyline, especially to the views of the East, where you can spot the Shard, the Walkie Talkie and the Heron Tower in the distance. The view from the top of the London Eye is the best way to see the divide between the capital’s rich architectural history and the modern feats of design and engineering that continue to shape the city.

As part of the experience, we were also treated to a talk by Gin Historian Jo Mckerchar (who has to have the best job ever). Little did we know that back in the 18th century London was in the grip of a gin craze, with the average city dweller drinking an average 14 gallons a year! We also learned all about the life and times of Alexander Gordon, the godfather of the London gin industry and the founder of the ever-popular spirit label Gordon’s Gin.

These days, Gordon’s Gin is a favourite of the royal family, having earned its first royal warrant from King George V in 1925, while Schweppes has served the royal family since 1836! So, if you’re looking for the best way to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, there’s nothing grander than sipping on a G&T while overlooking Buckingham Palace from the London Eye. Chin chin!
